GlennMR2
just been looking for some alloys and trying to get some rough prices, i like the wheels to fill the arches, at the moment i have standard 16" rims on there and they are not wide enough so was looking at getting 10in wide at the rear instead of the 9in i currently have, is it possible to have 8 or 9in but have a differant offset so they fill the arches better ?? tbourner
I don't think the width affects the offset at all. You could have 10" wide wheels or 4" wide, and with an offset of 42 (for example) they'd still stick out the same amount from the car. I think that's right anyway. Scooter
I think that's right anyway. i'm not sure it is TBH. your 9" wide 16" rim has a 50mm offset. A 10" wide rim also with a 50mm offset will i believe therefore be half an inch nearer the shock/spring etc on the inside of the wheel arch and on the outside 'fill the arch' by half an inch. I 'think' a 9" wide wheel with a offset of 37ish will give the same look as a 10" wide 50mm offset wheel, and the whole inch width difference will be on the shock /spring side if you see what i mean. However moving far away from the stock offsets is meant to adversely affect the handling, but saying that most aftermarket wheels are in the low to high 40's ET. tbourner
Ah OK, I thought offset was purely the gap between where the hub mounts to the alloy and the outside edge of the rim. So is it hub mounting to inside edge? That would make sense (small offset means wheels 'stick out' more?). I get confused because there's so many terms, like inset and outset and offset and now I'm upset!!
Scooter
The offset is the distance from the hub mounting surface to the imaginary centre line to the wheel.
GlennMR2
so scooter would these wheels stick out further towards the arch with this offset 18x8 front, offset 31mm, 225/40/18 tyres 18x9 rear, offset 38mm 265/35/18 tyres http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?p=408850&posted=1#post408850
Scooter
yes, my understanding is that the fronts would stick out 19mm more than the 16" stock wheels, and the rears 12mm more. i think you may want 235/40/18 's on the front and also the 31mm offset may upset the handling and cause the car to tramline and wear the inside edge of the tyres etc.
Scooter
I've done my technical assistance bit, now time for a blatant plug..... my blitz's are still for sale, used like Shaf's but correct sized front tyres, and nearer stock handling offsets and cheaper! Available to view and even try before you buy to see if they stick out enough for the skirts etc. ok i'll shut up now.....
