CJ
I thought I would start a new thread away from the HKS one and was wondering why the Motec is considered to be the best EMS. What makes it better than the others? Is it overkill on a fast road car and only suitable for a race car?
Miguel
I would not say the best ...its a bit like saying wich colour is the best when we all have our favorites. Most if not all the ECM's have been proven in one way or another . Some peolple like this one some people like that one, that all falls down to what the "tunner" likes and gets along with . At the end of the day they are all ECM's that do the job in the same way , Ajust fueling and timing . Some do it better than others and some get tuned better by the tuners that use them . Depends or your budget and how far you want to go . If you want plug and play the HKS , AEM and so on fit the bill. If you want to rewire the engine loom then the Motec and the autronic fit the bill. All ECM's fall into a cost and usage bracket. It's a case of using the correct ECM to fit your bill and how deep your wallet goes. The saying you get what you pay for has never been so true when it comes to ECM's.

Guest Terry S
OK not to argue with my Colleague, but IMHO Motec's are over priced. What Motec do have in their favour is the Leading Market name, and therefore a very large number of top tuners very familiar with their product. They will continue to use Motec because it works, they know the software, so why change. Familiarity with software is a MASSIVE part of why companies push certain EMS systems. TBH who can blame them. The Autronic guys I know hate the Motec software, the Motec guys I know, hate everything except Motec, The HKS hate Motec. In the previous thread I said as long as the hardware works, it is down to the Tuner. I stand by that. Find your hardware, then find the person who is regarded as the best at tuning it you have access to, and go from there.
CJ
Thats the way I was thinking. After looking at the websites of several EMS manufacturers, i was trying too draw comparisons with them and Motec to see what gace Motec it's USP. I was struggling to come up with anything I know that CW is a fan of Motec. Maybe if he reads this threead he can share his thoughts?
Guest Terry S
CJ, trust me I have done the whole Motec, Autronic, HKS, AEM, Hydra, Wolf, Link, etc to death. If you choose 1 of the first four I think you will be fine. Hydra the jury is out. There are differences, like processors and outputs in all of them. you need to decide what you actually want from the car. I will readily admit to being sceptical about the AEM's ability to control the autobox in the past, and as yet, no one has showed me otherwise. However, the fact that Kean has just put an AEM in his new car speaks volumes to me. Justin @ Tuning Concepts tuned it and he said it runs like a stocker. Now Justin swears to me he has the autobox thing sorted with the AEM, and TBH I have no reason to doubt him, I would just like to see it first hand. The other thing to remember is that all EMS manufactures will have "issues". These issues however get addressed with time. HTH, and if you want the reasons behind choices I have made please mail me. CJ
Thanks for the reply Terry. It is very interesting to see that Keen has chosen to run with an AEM system and that Justin is convinced that the Auto problems are behind them. That is much the same as what Sean said but I put it down to "salesmans bullshit"! I have to leave shortly but will mail you later
Guest Terry S
What can I say mate, they are all bias in one way or another. Why not ask an open question on SF as to if the AEM now controls the Autobox properly...
Wez
Just wondering if anyone has ever tried a Pectel on a Supra. Edit to add : http://www.pectel.co.uk/sub_page.cfm/section/products/editID/
Guest Terry S
Wez forget Pectel ( Ford ) They are good too. I looked into a Pectel on the Purple car. I know a few Cossie owners running it and it does a very good Job. Having said that, the 201 mph Cossie now runs an Autronic.
Chris Wilson
OK, resolution, huge range of software selectable sensor and trigger options, free regular software updates, fabulaous EMF proof design, military connector option, software sensor fault logging, vast familiarity with the software all over the world, superb build quality, good range of dedicated add on equipment. It's not the "best", but in the price range it is. IMO. Just look how many high end engine tuners use it. TBH the software interface is regarded as a bit clunky by many, and I prefer a two wheel mapping box, but I still think Motec builds, supports and updates a superb product. I get regular software update info e-mailed me (see below for a recent one) and I can enable all sorts of options on any of their ecus just by buying the password info to enable it. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The first release of Dash Manager for the ADL2 is now available from the MoTeC software website. http://software.motec.com.au/release> http://software.motec.com.au/release MoTeC ADL2 Dash Manager Software Release Notes Release 4.00P4 25 January 2005 ADL2 HEX 4.00P 7 January 2005 15:41 ADL2 Dash Manager 4.0.0.163 25 January 2005 10:18 Details Editor 1.6.0.9 25 November 2004 11:17 BR2 Config 1.0.0.14 19 November 2004 12:11 Telconvert 1.9.0.10 05 November 2003 14:18 Dashsend 1.5.0.2 14 July 2004 14:26 E888/E816 HEX 2.03 18 January 2005 09:45 Fixes and features in this release: * Support for ADL2 Hardware. JamesG
Just wondering if anyone has ever tried a Pectel on a Supra. Edit to add : http://www.pectel.co.uk/sub_page.cfm/section/products/editID/16 I should probably mention I write much of the embedded software for Pectel ECUs They are mostly (but not exclusively) used on race cars. The T10S is used on the Jaguar (now Red Bull) F1 car, and the Ford WRC car. It costs a bit more than most people's Supras on here, so I'd consider it a *little* bit over the top for the Supra
Wez
Hey James, Just posted that for fun. I have a friend who uses alot of Pectels in Scooby motors, nice bits of kit, what happened to the old T12 or is the T10 its replacement.
JamesG
hehe. We do a lot more ECUs than just listed on the website, but some are for specific customers. I've done quite a lot of scooby/evo stuff. I did actually think about the possibility of running a T6 on my car but it would be quite a lot of work and there would be a lot to do for stuff like autobox control. Would be cool though
