Triathlon

With my new found respect for health and fitness, I am giving serious thought to entering one of these. Also always wanted to do one as a kid.

The novice events seem decent:

400m open water swim

20km cycle

5km run

Looking to give it a go around May June next year. During the winter there are also some duathlons as well, which are all trail based. So trail running and MTB trail riding, which sounds great!

400m open water swim should be easy... used to do loads of swimming, but not lately.

20km cycle - I do that daily, almost. 9km to work, 9km home 3/4 days per week.

The run, well this is where my problem is, I hate running, no loathe it... Ok 5km is not that bad, but still, I hate it!

Anyone done a triathlon? Experiences? Training? etc...

yes mate i do it, done 2 this year so far, got another one in a few weeks then a few more through out the year, leading up to a full iron man in july next year in Austria.

They are really good fun, pleasant people at the events as well.

The sprint distance your going to be doing are relatively easy to give you an idea of timing i did the following splits for my first event.

20km bike 39mins

5km run 19mins

Thanks for that Richie!! Going to go read the websites now!! I have seen some of those specials... I have a road bike already, GT series 3, which should be good enough to start with.

Thats some half decent times!! I think the sprint style event will be a good way to see if I like the overall type of event.

yeh i did the sprint and loved it, hence following on, it can get quite expensive, buying kit and entering comps, although if like me you love it the money can be found.

a lot of sprint ones are done in pools so no need for a wetsuit, i lost a lot of time changing into cycle gear, then running gear. i have a tri suit now which saves a lot of time, worn under the wetsuit, into transistion remove wetsuit, jump on bike do ride then back in off bike trainers on then run, saves loads of time.

if you want a list of what you'll need let me know and i'll do one for you. my bike cost me 450 quid which is fine at the mo, going to get a new saddle later today as my one hurts a bit. i am saving at the mo for one of these for next years iron man!!

mmmmm only weighs about 16 lbs!!

some of the shops allow you to hire a wetsuit for the season, and as we are half way through it that might be an idea for you.

http://www.farnhamtri.org.uk/ might be local to you

Is that with or without all the additional add-ons that you will want?

Well I have most of the cycle stuff, thankfully! Will have to check my helmut, not sure on that one! Need more than enthusiasm for running, I am thinking lots and lots of glucose packs! And the constant voice in my head swearing at me!!

I have just started to use SPD pedals on my mountain and road bike, not the best shoes for road, but they are a good all-round set.

Add on's as in bike stuff? puncture kit is not really needed on the sprint stuff as your race is over if your going for time. if its best effort then yeh you can put one on.

small top tube bag for fuel bars

to be honest there is not much mor you need, i dont take anything other than above.

Not that stuff... along the lines of the uprated carbon aero bars with shifters, uprated gearsets, uprated brakes, etc....

depends on how far you want to go, thats why i am using my current bike till christmas then get the new one that is fully kitted out, my old one will become my winter bike.

if you aim is to get round the course then to be honest all the carbon stuff is prob an expense you dont need, the money you would spend changing all that could be put towards a complete package after you have done a few,a set of clip on area bars are good, mine cost 30 quid and it makes riding comfortable in the areo posistion.

Thats what I meant... Is £1495 the price as standard or is that with all the additions, or are you not having any additions?

no thats it in the picture, as is! they come as a very highly rated bike within the tri circles,

but a standard set up like that comes with the carbon wheels, aero bars shimano ultegra groupset, which is one down from there top dura ace set.

you can if you want go down the shopping list and add a few other extras like lighter pedals but i have my own now anyway, different saddle again, its what is ever comfortable for you, i hope to get one later today:d (saddle that is)
