Whitesupraboy2
Ok at BPU with Stock ECU the car adjusts the map for the car as it gets in all the data from the sensors. Also it wil ladjust to fuel for instance, if you used shell for 6 months then used tesco for 6 months the map would adjust slightly to the fuel (ithink!?!?) On mapped cars does the car still do this to the degree that the stock ECU would? Also which is it that is MAP is it the UK? Sorry for these questions, Ive been reading some artices on the web and I just wondered what mapped ECU's do to adjust for less oxygen in the air / fuels etc... Whitesupraboy2
*shrugs* Why? because ive been reading articles on the web about mapped cars and how ECU's learn. I.e the stock one. If a stock ECU learns by the fuel the oxygen its getting etc.. Does a mapped ECU do that too? I.e can change and learn or is it that its on a fixed map? Really I just want an answer or it will bug me
Tricky-Ricky
People make the mistake of thinking that the ECU is some magical device that can endlessly self learn, but the truth is it cant, well not like people think, it cannot really adjust to different petrol, all it can do if you stick in some low octane stuff, is wait until it detects knock and retards the timing, if it keeps detecting knock it will eventually revert to a default timing map, fuelling is set, however the closed loop section of the fuel map is variable when off boost and high load, and under 4,000RPM during this it relies mostly on the lambda sensor and temp sensors to adjust fuelling, the same goes for warm up, it has a default map for warm up, there are a few more bits it can do but its not like the most modern type of self learning ECUs that have a widband lambda feedback system. Whitesupraboy2
ah cool. cheers ricky. So I guess my next question would be does a mapped piggy back system (emanage blue / ultimate) do if it finds knock, will it change the timing or is the stock ECU still in control of that as its a piggy back? and what about a full standalone system? sorry for questions just something im interested in. Tricky-Ricky
You can add to the ign timing via a piggyback, and thats it, but if the std ECU detects knock it will retard the timing, stand alone is infinitely programmable, ie you can set your own knock limits and how much retardation takes place etc etc.

dangerous brain
AFAIK my aem has two modes. One is to set it to keep stoich (or a designated fuel ratio at set rpms) with a learning (auto tune feature I think) and that can alter the actual map itself. The other mode locks the map but allows a certain amount of leeway on the fuel. This is just an impression I get. To get the proper Gen ask our resident tuning guru RyanG
Tricky-Ricky
A lot of Stand alone ECU can self adjust, even the EMU;)
