Flipfinger
Squeaky when I turn either way, even when the engine is fully warmed up. My first thought is power steering fluid - and the cap rather handily says "Fill to correct level" - which is what?
eyefi
under that handily marked cap is a dipstick that has the hot and cold ranges marked on it. the hot method is more accurate.
Flipfinger
Right, cheers - looks like the level is just under the HOT sign - doh!
Rob
Thats what mine did, shortly before the pulley sheared off. Have you had your drive belt or cambelt changed by Toyota previously, as their blowtorch method caused all my problems. Otherwise you might just need a new belt at £60 odd. Flipfinger
Nope, Toyota haven't touched it.....got the cambelt changed when I bought it (about a year ago) though, by an independant garage.
Rob
I suggest you phone tem up and ask them the precise method they used to remove the crankshaft drive pulley. Mine sheared off as I was braking into a roundabout, which was interesting to say the least.
Flipfinger
Well, I'm going to investigate the power steering fluid first.
Terminator
If you spray some water onto the belt and it goes away then its the belt.
Flipfinger
I think it IS the belt.......as it squaks when the ignition is turned off too.....
Digsy
??? ??? The belt isn't doing anything when the ignition is off!
Flipfinger
No, as you turn the engine off, it squeaks briefly - I assumed it was the belt stopping
Digsy
Ah. Does it do it more when you go to full lock? That's when the load on the PAS pump will be higest. Or does it also happen when you turn A/C on?
Flipfinger
Turns out it's an engine pulley - £320, if you please. It'd be easier to stomach if I wasn't going to sell it next month.

They thought they had a PAS fault and they ended up with the crank pulley falling off on them. I wonder if it happens if somebody has previously bodged a cambelt change. Flipfinger
Yeah - it happened to Rob! I just thank Christ that I stopped driving it when it started to make an irregular noise.
