Guest DevilsAdvocate
Supercharged You are correct, I've just checked and the sabre was indeed supercharged, but it still had a problem with altitude. Not a problem your average type 55 Deltic loco was ever likely to encounter though.
juanchan
I'm quite pleased with guessing that it was an engine of some sort
Guest dangerousandy
The Class 55 'Deltics' were introduced in 1961 and a total of 22 were built, named after racehorses and famous regiments. they were the most powerful diesel-electric loco in the world at the time with 3300HP. 6 of them still exsist and I am going to Barrow Hill soon to see them at the DPS depot. Guest dangerousandy
Engine porn again and it's always multiples of three cylinders. Bring it on. :d oh yeah!! a sound recording will never do it full justice - you need to feel the noise to fully appriciate it. The Toyota Aygo 3-cylinder lump sounds great at full revs!!!! they go fkn well to for a 1.0L!!! Pic of Class 23 'baby deltic' R.I.P:(

Guest dangerousandy
trainspotter alert If you think the 2JZ-GTE sounds good, you aint heard nothing until you hear (a feel) a Deltic engine at full revs!
Tones
Deltic engine. Still in use in some minesweepers. Used because of the high power to small size. Unfortunately the governors were cr*p and the engine used to run away lol. Well done that man
paul mac
Packard/Merlin engined Mustangs were still better at altitude. Roy all a matter of which supercharger you had, but on the deck at low level the Sabre engined Tempest was untouchable even the Focke-Wulf 190D9/TA 152 couldn't live with it, final production versions of the Sabre produced 5500 hp at a mindblowing 3 bar boost eat that Mr Merlin , i love nerdy threads like this
Swampy442
Thats a crazy engine! Gotta wonder what crackpot sat down and designed it.... You cant beat the sound of big piston engines, Im a bit of a radial engine fan despite a career working on gas turbines. In the years of the Spruce Goose, Lycoming developed a 36 cylinder part water cooled monster, 127 litres that pushed out 5000hp, Id love to have heard that thing running!
