Broadband Speed Problems

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Iv got a problem with my Broadband speed at the Moment. Im only getting 2.2mb Max speed. But i shud be getting at least 6.5mb acording to the Pipex.com website and every other website iv checked.

I raised this problem with pipex and they sent a BT engineer out to check the Line sure enough there was a problem with it, the actual cable coming into the House was nearly halfed in 2, as it had been rubbing on something, So the guy fixed it and said this will cure your problem. It didnt.

But today when i was on the mkivsupra.net as you do on a friday and every other day i was getting a crazy speed of 8.1mb. Then for some strange reason, it went back down to 2.2mb.

Any idea's of what going on??

Im using a Netgear DG834 Router, which is hard wired into my pc. Not using wireless!!

Cheers.

You will also be asked to plug the modem straight into the master socket to eliminate any wiring in the house. If you are getting intermittent slow speeds then it is probably your ISP over subscribed on the exchange.

Well my property is on a brand new estate (building a new village) so there certainly isn't many people around me at the moment... very odd

Unless the new village has its own telephone exchange, you'll still be sharing the trunk pipe with potentially lots of other broadband users, and that will cause slow-down.

...any ideas on how to repair the connection?

Not sure. With sky broadband, does the broadband come down a standard land-line? If so, as steve said try plugging your router directly into the BT master socket. If it's still slow, I'd phone up sky and/or BT and ask why it's slow.

Of course, your slow d/l speed might simply be due to just running the test at a busy time. If you tried it again, say, on a weekday morning before going to work then you'd probably find it's a lot faster. Then at least you'd know it was down to contention issues rather than a wiring fault.
