DamanC
Right where to start. Im rather new to this AV stuff which is a bit of a poor show considering im an I.T. Bod I was thinking of getting one of these Vistron DVR-5006HD DVD/ DIVX HDMI players Im going to run a set of 5.1's off of it and it will be in use with one of these TV's; Sense 32" HD Ready LCD TV Now, I fancy having a go at this HD stuff by playing the video on the PC and watching the image via a VGA Cable from the PC to the TV. Trouble is, how do you get the audio signal over to the DVD player so that it plays through the 5.1's? For ref I have a creative XF-I thing and an onboard 7.1 sound card. JamesC
The way i run 5.1 out of my computer to an amp is each of the channels from the sound card use a stereo jack (well 2 share 1) then they split into a phono connection which then plugs straight into my amp. It doesn't look like that Vistron thing has seperate inputs for phono channels though only co-ax or optical.
DamanC
I think I get what you are saying, how about this thing then?
JamesC
Yeah i didn't make that very clear did i! Ermm i'm not sure what inputs it has. If you click on the picture in THIS LINK and have a look at the picture of the rear you can see how i connect it to my amp - it ha all seperate channel inputs e.g left front, left rear, centre etc So you need to make sure it has them, or change your sound card to something like THIS which has optical output, and should work with the first player you mentioned. JamesC
One other thing. If your using your computer for the video output why do you need the DVD player? Would you not be better going for a normal AV Reciever just for the sound??
DamanC
Now thats an AMP! I think im being a bit of a pratt tbh. Ignor the DVD thing. What I would need is something like this? The DVD player linked would just output to the above 5.1 system via phono leads? Then for the pc I would just need a jack to RCA cable? so from this http://www.celportfolio.co.uk/Phono-jack.gif to ----> http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/images/products/prod_100741.jpg Have I got it? ivan
I run the audio out from my PC via optical cable into my audio amp. But you'd need a sound card with digital outputs to do the same.
DamanC
I need pictures and large size words to understand that Ivan.
ivan
Digital - either a coax or SPDIF socket (or both) on the soundcard, and the same on the amp.
DamanC
Ah, I havent one of them. I only have 4 x 3.5mm jacks (1 mic) on my soundcard. Changing the sound card isn't an option as the PC is primarily a games rig.
JustGav
Did you get the 3.5 bay that comes with the XF-I unit.. that has got the digital optical on it. Also looking at the card that I can see, it has a large 3 layer pin connector on it, I'd assume there is a cable that can be bought that will do digital outputs. That is the one I looked at and assumed it was that one, guess the bay is an optional extra (read expensive), I can't help but think that the big D-sub connector is way of attaching an external break-out box (read expensive as well), but it may be an option of getting 7.1 out via digital without changing cards. Do you not perhaps have an SPDIF out on the motherboard, you could possibly use split sources but it does get interesting with config options. DamanC
I have no idea what a SPDIF is Told you i was useless. My Mobo http://www.sysopt.com/img/2007/08/p35c-ds3r_1.jpg Can i not just unplug the PC spekers and use 3 x 3.5mm Headphone Jack To 2 RCA Cables? You can use the RCA headphone jack route and it will work, but I found issues with it, (a lot of noise was injected on my setup). Your motherboard does indeed have an spdif (both optical and digital).. it is that grey looking flap thing (optical) and the coax by the keyboard port Tis also a nice motherboard with a more than capable sound card by all accounts, why use the creative one (Just out of interest?) 8 Channels ALC889A Audio controller # 1 x coaxial S/PDIF Out connector # 1 x optical S/PDIF Out connector 6 x audio jacks (Center/Subwoofer Speaker Out/Rear Speaker Out/Side Speaker Out/Line In/Line Out/Microphone)
DamanC
Ah, thats good news. Creative one was from my old rig, used it to lessen the load on the cpu when gaming. Trouble is, this 5.1 setup im looking at doesnt look like it has SPDIF input?

Come on, as an IT bod K.I.S.S Loose the extra card Even if you use the RCA headphone solution, it will be a lot easier using the onboard unit... DamanC
I dont mind swapping the config over, everytime I want to play HD Content as it will be fairly rare. Any nice Kiss kit you recomend Gav? Its a bedroom setup so, cheap is my favourate word here!
Ric
if you are connecting a HD TV to your pc dont use VGA (even if a tv is 1080p the vga input will be like 1024x768) so get a DVI to HDMI lead and your pc will display true 1080p
DamanC
TV is only 32" so it will only disply a 720 image. (will down scale 1080 content). Im not bothered abou the true 1080 as I wont notice it on a 32" screen, hence why most 32" screens are only 720.

Its a bedroom setup so, cheap is my favourate word here! My main HD system is very simple actually... Gigabyte fatal1ty board, running a E6750 thingy processor. the mobo has built in audio and also an HDMI output. So it was a case of just use an optical for surround sound and HDMI for HD content to telly (HDMI/vga didn't see TOO much of a difference, although I'm not sure you can use VGA when you use blueray due to copy protection rubbish, must be a workaround). I had to use the optical sound because for some reason the HDMI sound is only 2 channels, but it is an oldish motherboard now. Optical straight into my old sony STR-965 (I think it is), and HDMI into the telly. I originally had seperate graphics and sound cards in the system, and took them out as I found the E6750 is MORE than capable of doing HD in software. Have a look here... http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=134427&highlight=htpc (And I'll put my hands up to having to ask what sockets are out there these days, AMD has AM2 and some other bits, I felt old....) DamanC
Ric, It wont hurt me to get a DVI -> HDMI cable anyways for the future. Something like this ok? Just slightly concerned as it says HDMI to DVI (wrong way round), will it work the way I want?

Mine specifically said on the package that its a 2way cable, so i think there maybe two types
