Oh, and make the thing voice activated. I've been working on speech recognition stuff for a while now, it would be quite easy to use one of the desktop dictation packages to make all your "carputer" functions voice activated...

Will that work with my accent?

slightly off topic i know .. but i had to demo Os/2 warp 4 voice recognition back at the launch party in San Fransico ... could i get the bugger thing to recognise me ? could any of the US Warp 4 developers get it to understand them ... bugger could they.

in the end it recognised an Austrian with a really thick accent and a massive head cold - he got 100/100 on the calibration score. the computer could understand him, but no one else could.

still i got a slot on CNN which was nice lol

anyway back to the Carputer ...

will you be able to have something sense the speed and adjust voume etc automatically ? and what about dimming or brightening the screen accordingly to glare ?

Well Taz will have both a car cpu to do what CJ suggested (already setup and waiting to go in when the car arrives) and some nice countermeasures to ensure I dont lose any more points (if you get my drift).

Migs, I will need to find an effective way of mounting the laptop and your ideas would be appreciated when I pop round m8.

I'm sure I could knock you up something ;)

I've got a friend who's a programmer and he's playing about with all sorts of funky app's at the moment as he has the same system as me.

Give us a few weeks and we'll hopefully have some really cool stuff :D

No problem, we're using it at work to recognise air traffic controller's instructions and get the simulated aircraft to do the appropriate thing and read back the responses. You can train it to your voice, although with a limited vocab which you would have, it would have no problem. Some of the people we've had using it have very thick Scottish or Irish accents. Mind you, never tried a Welshy on there yet  Seriously though, done correctly modern speech rec works amazingly well.
