Praying Mantis Question

Hi all, i have had my female praying mantis for about 5 months now.

Over the last 2 or 3 weeks its belly section had grown a ridiculous ammount. When i woke up this morning and had a look in to the tank, her stomach had significantly reduced in size and i just assumed she had not eaten.

Then i realised a big ootheca (egg) stuck on the top of the tank - it kind of looks like a small bee hive, that sort of texture.

My question is - How can she possibly lay an egg if she has never been in contact with a male mantis??

Or is this just an egg casing and does not actually have any eggs in it??

Many thanks.

Hey Kieren,

It wont be full of baby mantids unless it is the virgin mary of the mantis world...

It should be just an empty egg hun. ;)

xx

:(:(:(

I was hoping by some miracle that it would have some mantids in there!!

Is this quite normal for them to lay a dud ootheca then??

Yep... it is normal... kind of like when hens lay eggs that are unfertilised. Unless you mated yours with the other one you had... :(

But Matt, (who I hatched those ones with), has got loads of different types of Mantids now, so let me know if you want any more :)
