Dazzi
Right, never had a misfire before and I can tell straight away somethings up with the old girl. I recently change my plugs and have had problems since. I used the below guide when buying my plugs. I found out the previous plugs were NGK - Iridium - BKR7EIX (0.8mm gap) which are supposed to be used on a TT @ upto 1bar. I installed some new NGK - Iridium IX - BKR5EIX-11 (5464) for the N/Aand gapped them to 1.1mm as below. The misfire: When idle and gunin it the engine is happily ticking away but when it comes to traffic lights and i start to move off from stationary I get a 'PUT PUT PUT' It sounds terrible like the exhaust is clogged up and it's struggling to breathe. What should I do? Re-gap my new plugs to the 0.8mm as they came or refit my old plugs for now and buy some newer BKR7EIX (TT 1bar) plugs seeing as they worked since April 2006? Thanks Normally Aspirated NGK - Standard - BKR5ES-11 (2382) - gap 1.1mm NGK - V-Power - BKR5EYA-11 (2526) - gap 1.1mm NGK - G-Power Platinum - BKR5EGP (7090) - gap 1.1mm NGK -Laser Platinum - BKR5EP-11 ( 3440) -gap 1.1mm NGK -OE Laser Iridium - IFR5T11 (4996) - gap 1.1mm NGK - Iridium IX - BKR5EIX-11 (5464) - gap 1.1mm Denso Platinum - PK16R11 - gap 1.1mm
bromy
Did you say you re-gapped the iridiums? You shouldnt be re-gapping them really. I would use these Denso Platinum - PK16R11 - gap 1.1mm. Whats it like on idle when you drive it normally
Dazzi
Yea, re-gapped as the guide said. Im guessing this was a mistake? Does the same when I drive off gently from a stand still. Thanks
bromy
You may well have knackered them by re-gapping, are you sure all six leads are pushed home correctly
Dazzi
Yea, all six were pushed down properly. I might try my old plugs again and see how it goes.
Wez
I am pretty sure the Iridiums come pre-gapped and should be left alone otherwise you damage/weaken them.
Dazzi
I have some spares that I have not gapped. Will get this fitted tomorrow and report back. Thanks
Dazzi
Ok im confused. The spare plugs (NGK - Iridium IX - BKR5EIX-11 (5464) - gap 1.1mm) I have are 1.1mm. The plugs that are in my car same as above were 0.80mm. Why are they 2 different gaps for the same model number????
bromy
N/A Plugs should be 1.1mm as per Toyota manual
Dazzi
Well, just had a closer looks around the engine to see if any vacuum pipes were off, spark plug leads were on ok - everything fine. Then I was in the process of taking the new plugs out to replace them with the old, I pull on number 5 spark lead and the metal clip on the inside just broke off and still attached to the spark plug. Came off without much resistance. Obviously this must have been causing some problems? Will order anew fresh batch of plugs from a better retailer this time while im waiting for new leads. Dazzi
Was the leads that were causing the problem. All sorted now

Tones
instead of starting a new thread id ask here, im gettin new plugs for my standard 97 TT, do i have to gap those ngk platinums myself?? how is it done? thanks NGK - BCPR6EP-11 - gap to 1.1mm PLATINUM
Dazzi
Everybody says not to gap Irridiums, not sure about platinums... You gap them with pliers or in my case a hook style bottle opened (without touching the centre electrode) then use a feeler gage - http://www.maritime.org/fleetsub/diesel/img/fig2-04.jpg to make sure they are gapped properly. All you have to do is gap them and test if the correct mm fits tightly in the spark gap - repeat very gently until you got the right gap - BUT BEFORE ALL THAT Just double check around on some other forums or on NGK website if that is the right gap you need. Alex
the -11 = the gap they come pre set to... I will clear up my wording in the Spark plug FAQ...
