Hi,

Did you gap your iridiums? Spark might not be at its peak if not. Some info:

Normally Aspirated

NGK - Standard - BKR5ES-11 (2382) - gap 1.1mm

NGK - V-Power - BKR5EYA-11 (2526) - gap 1.1mm

NGK - G-Power Platinum - BKR5EGP (7090) - gap 1.1mm

NGK -Laser Platinum - BKR5EP-11 ( 3440) -gap 1.1mm

NGK -OE Laser Iridium - IFR5T11 (4996) - gap 1.1mm

NGK - Iridium IX - BKR5EIX-11 (5464) - gap 1.1mm

Denso Platinum - PK16R11 - gap 1.1mm

Im over in Ripon btw

Also you put you spark leads the on right way? I.E Spark plug 1 with lead 1? - Just tryin to get an idea... Been a few on here that were misfiring because the leads got mixed up

yer i hear what your saying but i bought car with this fault from cold i could sit it on limmiter and its no problem but just let it warm up for ten and this prolem creeps in it not a static fault, in my mind it is something like the dizzy itself coil pack or ignition amp as they warm up and break down? but not having a lot to do with these i don't know if this is common and were to get parts if so cheers.

Try disconnecting the battery for 10 mins when you get a chance. This resets the ECU. Once this happened to me, the car was purring bumbumbumpopbumbum - a very light popping sound every 10 seconds or so. This went away by accident when I disconnected the battery to fit my new sped dials. Give it a try ;)

Its very rare to hear NA's having such problems..........

It you search on here for how to read error codes i have a toyota manual i could look up the code and it will have a series of likely causes and action to take to investigate further.

Actually to save you time here's the link to how to obtain the error codes.............

i had this on my n/a once and it turned out to be the small black coil from the distributor, infact i may have my replaced one still here somewhere which you could try and illiminate that anyway?

must have been braking down somehow, and i went through all the obvious things before i found the bugger!

Have you tried it without the the O2 sensors connected, could be faulty as once its warm it tries to go into closed loop where the sensor comes into play...thus a faulty signal causes over/under trimming of the fuel map.

If you have had no success with the above then its probably spark related as you say. Is it one cylinder missing or random ones?

As a "general" rule in car mechanics, I have found that if you have ignition problems when the engine is warm, then it is usually the coil or distributor to blame.

Try the reset on the battery, hope it works. If not try working through the list of possible suspects based on sequence and of course price! ie: coil before distributor.

Good luck.

Any further info may help us narrow other possible sources.:search:

cheers guys thanks for all the ideas i will try to explain a bit more from what you have told me, i have been working on it tonight and have got test lights in line on the plug leads and the missfire is sporadic it does get a lot worse the harder you rev it then it starts to spit back in to the air box and eventually stop.

The three items to me i think could be giving me trouble are the ignition amplifier, the coil or the destributer, personally i think it's the dizzy becaouse that seems most affected by heat? a small black box was mentioned before more info on that would be great, all this info is really appriciated if im not clean on anything just say and il try to explain a bit better. cheers:):)

shame as i've got the toyota manual but there's loads of info...........

i've had a look and going on your hunch there is a section that may be a possibility?

It has a table of resistances (and has a HOT and cold reading) that should be present between the terminals off the electrical loom connector to the distributor (faces you when stood in front of the engine)

When disconnected the part still attached to the distributor has 4 terminals referenced as follows

NE G1 G2 G- (its not 100% which side/end of the terminal NE or G- is, but this is the order from one side/end to the other)

Resistance between

G1 (pickup coil) and G- Cold 125-200ohms Hot 160-235 ohms

G2 (pickup coil) and G- reading as above

NE (pickup coil) and G- Cold 155-250 ohms Hot 190-290 Ohms

If they are outside these ranges the 'book' says replace distributor.....

btw this is for error code 12 (one flash and 1.5 secs after two flashes)

hope you sort it............
