MichaelG
Recently had one of my dipped headlight bulbs go on my J-Spec Supra, and read up about replacing the bulbs on here, it was mentioned that Toyota charge a fortune for the bulbs, and not to buy from there. But instead, buy a 9005 UK Bulb, and as these dont fit, simply modify the locating lugs on them and hey presto a bulb at a third of the price ! Toyota quoted £23 inc vat for one J-Spec bulb, and i got two new 9005's from Halfords last night for £18. Took them in this morning and thought best to replace both, carefully filed down the locator lugs and superb............fitted in the hole in the headlight first time snug as a bug. Went to stick on the loom connector and it doesnt fit !!!! The Japanese bulb inside the connector has two electrical contacts, as does the UK Bulb, but inside there is one single plastic groove wheras on the UK Bulb there are two and the connector cant go over this. £18 completely wasted on two bulbs which have now been trimmed and modified as suggested, and cant be taken back. Coupled with the fact i am now going to have to pay £23 to Toyota for a bulb, so thats £41 to replace what had started off as one blown headlight bulb. Not amused ! Gonna be one of those days me thinks.
Jake
Trim off that small piece inside the bulb connector and it'll be fine. I did mine with a Dremmel. Only took a few seconds.

Thorin
I don't know what you filed down but I filed down the two plastic lugs on the bulbs connector and it fitted. Well actually I didn't even file, all it took was about 30 seconds sawing away with a penknife blade and chip them off.
jaymdee
Dont have a farkin Dremel. QUOTE] Mate, I boughts Philips Blue vision and they took me 2 1/2 hours to fit. I used sand paper & Wet & Dry on one, to reduce the size of the fitting diameter so the connector would fit, which took ages (no Dremel). I then used a pair of pliars on the other to simply snap bits of plastic off - took 5 Mins. PAITA, but I can now see at night!!! J
Digsy
When I changed from J-spec to UK spec lights, I went and bought a set of UK spec bulbs because as we have all found out, the J-spec and UK spec bulb holders are different. UK bulbs won't fit in a J-spec (withough modding) and vice-versa. When I tried to plug the connectors in (which were obviously still J-spec) At first they wouldn't go anywhere near the bulbs. I thought this would be a problem as I don't have a farkin Dremmel either. However I then noticed that I was trying to plug the main beam bulb into the dipped beam socket. When I got them round the right way then jusy sweetly clicked in with no dremmeling necessary. Maybe there are more than one type of connector floating about but I can categorically state that I can connect UK bulbs from Halfrauds into my J-spec loom with no Dremmeling. MichaelG
Its cool, i had to cut the two bottom lugs on the outside and the bulbs fitted into the holes in the headlights perfect, then i had to shave down the two small plastic raised grooves inside the actual bulb socket.........now they are in there and workin a treat ! Surpise Surprise Toyota never phoned to tell me the J-Spec bulb was in though.
dangerous brain
I posted about this before all you have to do is get a sharp knife and use a gas cooker flame or lighter and heat up the blade tip til its proper hot and it will slice them bits off in fractions of a second. Is better for the lugs as well as you don't risk shearing off the whole lug. You would of course have found that if you had put 9006's in that slot they wouldn't have had the twin internal lug problem.
MichaelG
Yeah but the base of the 9006 is too big to fit through the round hole
dangerous brain
Is it?? I thought I had fitted a 9006 bulb before?? maybe i am mistaken. But a hot knife tip is the way to go. Also the 9005 bulbs are available in legal 65w versions which the 9006's aren't
MichaelG
The 9006's have a larger round base at the socket end of the bulb, and dont fit into the 9005 dipped beam socket regardless of the lugs. The 9005's only fit if you trim down the two bottom parallel lugs to half the size, they are quite soft plastic on the ones i got from Halfords, and i managed it easily enough with a sharp pair of snips.......slowly lol Saying that i would easily do it again for all the time it takes, rather that than pay £23 inc vat for one from Toyota!
