Low Idle

Supra ST Myster

Recommended Posts

Last couple of weeks noticed the idle has dropped to 600rpm and the lights on the dash are dim plus the car sometimes tries to stall but doesnt (autobox), but when you rev it a little you can see the lights brighten up, measured the voltage when engine running and its 12.99 which isnt right but when i blip the throttle it goes to 14.2V which it should be then drops again to 12.99, so is the alternator causing the low revs or is it something else as the voltage is right if the revs are around 900-1000

I had the same issue on one occasion last April - it seemed to go away after driving for half an hour or so (idle was ~400rpm).

Coincidentally, the issue re-occurred for the first time this very morning - I'll see how it is on the drive home. In recent mornings I've let the car hunt on idle for a few minutes before driving off (de-misting, de-icing windows etc.) and all has been fine. Today I drove off straight away - would this make any difference?

idle air controll valve (iav) clean this and your problem with hunting solved also clean throtle body. carbon build up on these components causes idle probs

Sounds as the right solution as I've had this prob for a while. Where is the IAV placed and how would you go about cleaning it as well as the throttle body?

Whats the idle supposed to be (without the aircon on)?

I get this too, there is no pattern I can identify, doesn't seem dependant on weather, the only common factor is that it disappears after about 10 minutes of driving and (as previously stated) can be corrected by applying the throttle. I’d be interested to hear if anyone solves this one way or another!
