Electricians - I have a phone problem :(

My home phone has been working fine, until last Wednesday, when suddenly I have no dial tone, and no one can call me.

 

So today I called BT, they were totally un-usefull, after listening to computer lady for 10 mins then having to tell everything twice to a 'non english call centre representative' I finally found out I had to try a new phone in the BT test socket of my main BT socket.

 

Ok so I've done that and I get a connection.

 

So back to BT and they basicly say its your fault you have a phone extension p!$$ off!

 

So what can I check? All the wires seem to be crimped down and in place still. And I cant see why that suddenly on Wednesday my line goes.

 

Anyone local electricians wanna pop round and give me a hand?

I had that, i was on the internet surfing away and thought i'd pop up the spar and get a pizza for lunch, whilst i was on the way up there i noticed a bt 'engineer' fiddling around in the little green exchange box at the end of the road, by the time i got back the line (and internet, obvioulsy) was dead.

 

By the time i got back up there to tell him, he'd buggered off.

Was on the mobile to bt straight away, but it still took them 10days to reconnect it, idiots.

 

Edit : just read that again, so you have a connection in the main socket, but not in any of the others?

just run this past me did you use the same phone in the main socket as you did in the other sockets around the house? if so what might of happened is there could be a lose wire in side one or more of the sockets only way of checking is to undo the screws on the front of the sockets

internet is still fine.

 

The main BT box in the house has 2 connections, 1 accessible from the outside which doesnt work, after un-screwing the front of you can get access to the test line, which works!

BT say that because of this, there is probably a fault with the extension that was wired into my BT box. and therefore not their problem!

 

I just find its wierd that it just suddenly happend :blink:

you want to be measuring 50V across the phone line, bascially bt will have a pair of cables comming in the master box (one with a yellow capacitor in it) going to terminals 2 and 5, so firstly remove the half section off and see if there is 50V comming in,if there is and you plug a phone in that point and it works then its not their problem.

Hold up. If the guy doesn't know what a multi-meter is and how to use one should we really be advising he takes apart his BT owned equipment? :blink:

 

I would be more inclined to call BT again, ask someone to talk you through the diagnostics you can do and see where that leads. Without knowing your exact individual situation it's hard to give advice given the information received so far. Sounds to me like either a bit of kit has locked up (but BT testing the line should have cleared that off) or you have a broken or damaged wire somewhere in the house. When calling into your house what do you hear? A constant tone? Permanently engaged tone? Dead Air?

 

You say the phone works out of the test socket proving that the line itself outside your house is OK so I'd be inclined to try and check any wiring going from the BT box into your premesis. Also, check that the BT box doesn't look damaged, wet or burnt in any way.

lol i can use a volt meter. i use them on cat5 stuff all the time, had never known them to be called a multimeter before though. have got enough savvy not to make it worse :) (i hope)

 

You wouldn't happen to have a CAT5 cable tester in your arsenal...Put an RJ45-RJ11 adapter on it, and then a RJ11 to UK phone thingy and see which ones are working.

no, you are allowed to pull off that half section actually as that is where you test to see if its a bt fault or wiring in the house :rolleyes:

 

You can plug a phone into a test port, yes. Not rip the NTE apart to test across faulty connections though. Thats what the engineers are for ;)

we had a similiar problem 2 weeks ago with the BT line in to the wifes salon, thursday night when we locked up, it was working, Friday morning it was not!!!

 

rang BT and they did a check on the line and suprise suprise they confirmed there was a fault!! no shit!

 

i then brought down the house phone to negate the fact that none of the phones in the salon were faulty and then reported back to them, they ran another check and said they would send an engineer out, £135 call out and £99.88 an hour there after!!!!

 

3 hours later the engineer found the fault in the green box at the exhange, 2 wires had shorted out due to them being moved by the engineer the previous night.

 

You can ring them to get all house calls diverted to your mobile so not to miss any calls. hope this helps a bit.
