Best single turbo and where to get it from
chris_bramley replied to chris_bramley's topic in mkiv Technical
Yeah Dude said it's all BS and frankly like I said I want power and speed more than that. If I can run a t71 or whatever at 1.5 bar odd (or whatever) and get 3.5 0-60 and 7 odd 0-100 and brush near 200 mph, I don't care if my hp drops to 300 whatcha recommend? the 67 or the 71? I notice the 71 is in your ultimate street fighter package. I guess the 71 puts out more power and it can't lag THAT far behind the 67... -

that sounds excellent. if it'll keep up with and or equal the named turbo kits I'm all for it, only thing is I'd like 600 at the wheels think the t71 kit (biggest vortex do I think) would do this nicely? Ian, what performance do you get? I;d rather have a car that does 3.5 0-60 or whatever at lower bhp than one with 600 bhp that isn't quite as quick but might do 10 more mph top end. It's not ALL about the horsepower... Ddue says a smaller turbo correctly tuned can whup say a t88 0-60 and prolly equal it 0-100. only loses out real top end... I want a car I can still drive on the road regularly. Think F&F road usable awesome power rather than lemans racing death star laser ultimate track power. By silly money, I mean buying an hks turbo that costs £6k including fitting... I mean, ouch. Vortex, you do fitting as well? What's the fastest kit you do for overall power? -

ok guys, that's fair enough... I DO want a road car but it would be nice to have the option to upgrade later, so isn't it best to start out wiuth the best? If you think the greddy or hks aren't the best, maybe you can recommend one? I am not interested in image and being able to say my car is xxxbhp as much as having the least lag and the best boost possible... it's ALL about performance. If my car with a nameless turbo will flatten something with an hks or greddy of same or higher spec for less hp then by all means, point me to the kit that does it. I'm looking for cracking 0-60 (sub 4 secs) and 0-100, and if possible 200 mph top end eventually, and the turbo is going to be the single biggest factor in the upgrade. I currently have twin hybrids. I want far more from my car. I hear the bigger turbos give higher power, but smaller ones spool quicker. what will give me the power and response to beat most everything on the road, without spending silly money and going for the "image" of big names? -
Best single turbo and where to get it from

initially I want to have good performance without upgrading the core engine overly. several expert ppl reckon the supra's engine is fine if I do the injectors, turbo and ecu and get it all tuned in. The rest can be added bit by bit... t88 would be awesome but isn't the lag awful? Whereas the hks is far less laggy and just as powerful by all accounts but GOD does it cost more... Do ppl think hks or greddy? : Greddy HKS -
If I'm going to splash out I might go for an HKS T51R SPL. I hear they will roast most anything else, with faster spool up and high end output up to 1000 BHP. Any suggestions? And where the HELL do you get them in the UK? Chris

Holy shit! £500!! I take it that without this you have no hot air.... does anyone have a guide to DIY so I can see where the matrix is and a list of what I/a mechanic friend would need?
-
Thanks for everyone's suggestions, unfortunately everything I have tried has not worked - I think the system leaks under pressuer so unless I want to drive the car at a stately 40mph top I think the matrix needs doing. anyone willing to quote around Surrey?
-
Did it, bugger, bout 1cm of water left in it. Damndamndamn. I guess that gives it 99% definite that it's the bloody matrix. It was so sudden too, i was hoping it was a blocked ac channel Whereabouts is your boss and what's his availability... and price for it? I stopped working just b4 xmas, bad time to be out of a job, so I'm very tight on money at the moment. Last thing I needed If anyone knows any other places around surrey that can do this, and soon, PLEASE let me know! C

no idea on checking these, I have a weird range of knowledge about the car. I know some stuff really well but I've not had it too long and the layout is different from my mkiii so I don't know where the overflow is... anyone got hints on checking the above? It is unlikely to be a rubber fit, the car was full of MIST - not just condensation but honest to God flowing damn FOG! if I can work out checking the above I'll do it tomorrow and hope to God the suddenness after rain means a blocked drain. Someone MUST know a mechanic in Surrey who can do this at short notice... and for how much!
-
Oh and re the A/C drainage hose/heater matrix and other stuff that can be checked over, does ANYONE in the UK know of a Haynes-type manual for this car? For to know what the hell I dost look at, kind of fing.
-
Thanks for the swift info guys. Just to further pinpoint things, I have tried A/C (which works fine but doesn't really clear it), Full hot air, and every stage in between, on both recirculating and atmospheric settings. Nothing seems to work. It's weird, the windscreen steams up literally 10-20 seconds after I wipe it clear. Hazardous and bloody annoying, nothing seems to have changed; it worked, it rained, it didn't work all of a sudden. Arent' these things meant to start going wrong and get worse?! C
-
Managed to find other posts (search didn't find them first time ?! Hence the post). It happened suddenly, could it be ANYTHING except the heater matrix? And can someone give me a rough quote/somewhere good in Surrey that would do it? It was fine until a coupla days ago, it rained, I went to bed, got up, got in the car lunchtime and bam... started misting. I assumed it was as per, stuck heat on, no change... COULD this be down to leaves or something? My aforementioned friend said his mum had this issue, he cleared leaves out of the rain channels around the air intake and it worked, or something. Argh! NOT now!
-
Hi Life was fine till it rained a few days ago, as it does often. My car is fine in rain, up until now, when it now steams up inside unbelievably... in fact, with the heaters on full blast on the windscreen it clears perhaps a centimeter at the bottom. I drove carefulyl home tonight, and when I opened the car a huge gush of mist came out with me. The blower itself seems to be pumping incredibly moist air intot he car, from whence it cannot escape! :O Can anyone help? My mechanic friend said sometimes it happens on most any car when a rain channel is blocked by something and moisture pools, and mists into the blower system, but I don't know where these are on the car or how to fix it! Help! Thx C

FYI y'all, this was HKS's FORMAL word on the subject: "...contact the HKS dealer that originally purchased the unit from. They will be able to supply you with replacement instructions." I said I couldn't (came on the car)... "...due to the nature of the product and the ramifications of getting it wrong I would contact a HKS dealer and have them set the system up for you." Jeez, I just want the MANUAL! If I wanted it retuned I'd ask, but since I'm a computer engineer and capable of far more complicated things than a 4 button programming control I am almost POSITIVE I can figure out safe running parameters. All I need is the manual to say how to set it, and I'll go from there
-
That's cool but I still need the instructions on how to do it and manually program the unit - I have no documentation at all for the V series. SOMEONE must have a manual or something!
-
Thanks Wez, however... they only go up to the EVC IV! Is there ANYWHERE that has instructions for the EVC V? Or is it so similar to the IV that the same setup applies?
-
Aha! This assumes you know how to program it then. I have no instructions and want to fiddle with mine, but I need to know all the right button combinations etc to muck with. any chance you could scan and email the instructions? Or perhaps write a better set as I hear they aren't perfect? Any help would be hot, I don't want to have to belt around in thrid gear in "learning mode" - I know what settings I want. thanks! Chris
-
Dude, PLEASE tell me you got instructions for the HKS EVC V? Mine has none...
-
Thanks dude, but read it and done it already - it was my first port of call. I used the same wilkinsons rubber feet, and blocked the lot off, but I STILL get compressor surge, even though I've adjusted the BOV to dump earlier, and .2 is missing... odd! the real BASTARD is that because the stock one had obviously gone a little while b4 I bought the car, the first turbo is now whining due to overcompensation. WOD, anyone?
-
riiiight... found some info! Appears this is probably compressor surge which isn't great. i have adjusted the BOV to dump earlier but I think I can still hear the flutter. this has only appeared after I removed the stock BOV. Replacing it isn't an option, so help! I need to solve this (along with another few minor issues). Oh and could the drop in bar be due to the aftermarket BOV being in the intercooler assembly, and the stock one being right next to the turbos? so havign the car tuned to 1 bar with that ON then removing it (and removing the need for that little pipe over the engine) would drop the bar? Or am I just talking shit?! Need to talk to Dude bout loads of stuff but I NEVER manage to call him at the right moment so still trying to talk to him

I posted recently regarding a flapping I can hear in the HKS 'shroom (befoer the "frog croak"). I;ve only been hearing this since I took the stock BOV out (it blew; last owner didn'tuninstall it when he put the blitz in). So, the BOV was installed, the car was tuned, and now the stock BOV has gone. I've binged up the turbos and the vacuum tube as per instructions on removal of the stock... and I've lost like .2 bar of boost, and I now get that flapping noise outta the HKS filter. can someone instruct me in the art of tuning the aftermarket BOV to prevent this flap fwsshfwsshfwssh noise? i hear some ppl think this is normal but a coupla mechanic pals say it's not ideal, I get that noise echo and lose performance - and it could be where me boost is at. Ideas?
-
Hmm I noticed this after removing the stock BOV (already had a blitz on it). Now before the BOV dumps I get the whiffle whiffle or fwshfwshfwsh flapping noise from the right (confirmed its the hks 'shroom), then after a second I get the low moan. aaaooooohhhw. Just like that kinda frog noise i guess. I'm told this is an echo on the turbos (I think they are stage 2's,. def hybrids, and capable of 1.4 bar). I favour the BOV straight FWSHH noise tho. Anyone confirmed this is just a noise and nothing to worry about? As I said it wasn't there with the stock BOV that I could hear but now I hear it whenever I back of the throttle. Long as it isn't serious, and/or doesn't sap my power - the car;s already running .2 bar under what it should
-
got em. Fitted em. There's no more boost hiss... but my first turbo is still whining a bit (bit better tho. And my boost is still ooooh .98 when it should be 1. grrrr.
-
Wilkinsons, you say? found one 5 miles from work. they have no rubber feet on their site tho... I think I'll call
-
As I planned I tried with some rubber feet I had, which were too big and I heard one pop off this morning on the way to work (2k rpm max drive in, anyone? ). I'll see if I can pop out lunchish, anywhere good around uxbridge/heathrow?
