Hi all,

seem to have a problem others have experienced with main warning lights.

Main warning triangle in rev comes on with engine management light + traction off also on

This is not happening all the time just on and off.

Have performed a search but no final answers given to this problem.

Any ideas before i ring Chris Willson for his opinion.

Well, it should be storing an error code in the ECU which is easy enough to read. Short out TE1 and E1 pins in the diagnostic port and then watch the check engine light when you switch on the ignition to position 2. If the light flashes constantly and regularly it's got no stored errors, otherwise it will count up to the first digit, pause, then count up to the next digit, pause, and move on to the next stored error code or pause longer and loop back to the first one.

Let us know what you get :)

53 is :

"Knock Control Signal

Engine Control computer (for knock control) malfunction as engine speed between 650rpm and 5200rpm"

So that would explain you random lighting-up of the light with no apparent change to the way the car behaves. Unless you are handy with spanners, a multimeter, and the wiring of the Supra you'll be off to Mr Toyota with this info in hand :)

It's bad if you are running the ragged edge of detonation and you should certainly get it fixed, but you won't damage anything driving under moderate boost in the mean time. Either a knock sensor has gone, or the wiring to the ECU has been damaged in some way. A continuity test will prove the wiring, and that's what my money is on as the source of the problem. Substitution is the only way of checking the knock sensor but leave that until you've checked the wiring.

Ian,

had a chat with Chris Wilson about this problem and he gave the same diagnosis.

I have spent a good part of the afternoon sorting this and the only fault i could find was a loose earth coming from my FCD. I have cleared all the error codes, given the car a good run (one hour) and so far i have no warning lights or error codes being recorded. fingers crossed and thanks for the advice Ian.

Regards

Wayne.
