Steve W
Funny how mileage creeps up on you !! Since fitting the new wheels and tyres I've been debating whether to change the rears for slightly wider tyres to protect the rims better !! I kept thinking "have to wait till they wear out" OR "get 'em changed and keep the others in the garage as spares". Don't know WHY but while out shopping today decided to just pop me head under the back and see IF i could see the tread wearing 'evenly' yet, in case i'd made a poor choice of tyre pressures ??? AARRGGGHHHHHHHH . . . . WHAT tread ?!?!?!? As you can see from the pics below, i was SHOCKED to find the tread was NO MORE ! At first i couldn't believe it...even blamed Carole's son for doing Burn-Outs or Donuts without me knowing WHEN we thought about the DATE i got 'em done and we worked out a rough MILEAGE it turns out it was ~4 1/2 months and ~5,000 miles !!!!! They are (.....WERE !) Toyo T1-R's, the newer ones, supposed to be REALLY good. Never found 'em VERY sticky to be honest and since ~January they've been getting skittish when cold and not 'perfect' even after warmed up. . . . can see WHY now ! ! SOOOO, gotta get 2 new rears this week, they WERE 275/35-18s but i want either 285/35-18s , 285/40-18s , or 295/35-18s. ????????? don't care about ride height (higher the BETTER !) don't care about speedo (bigger diameter the TRUEr the speedo anyway) all i care about is Wheel Arch / Mileage / SAFE / PRICE ( ) Any views/experience-of-size etc ?????????? FatS (and...a HORRIFIED Carole !!!!!!!)
China Man
I have been told that camber setting can cause uneven wear. I had my rear tyre changed because the inner edge was all worn out and that was within a single day at Bovington. However, the tyre place explain to me that the camber setting that cause uneven tyre wear will give a better corner handling?? If you don't have the camber adjusted it will eat through the tyre like you had there. I have Eagle F1 and I think a few others recommanded it to me http://www.blackcircles.co.uk
Pig
You need to get that sorted. not worth just replacing tyres, will just do it again! believe me. I lost 2 new tyres cause of it
Whitesupraboy2
you got lucky checking those didny you mate. 2yrs ago i only checked my tyres only coz i was going to bolney. Guest SteveW's Carole
I have been telling him for a little while the car had been stepping out when I have been driving ... mainly in the wet or when its been a bit icy!!! Its been worse driving on concrete road surfaces rather than tarmac! BUT the last couple of weeks I have noticed that it hasn't made a difference whether its been wet or dry. I thought it was my driving, but every time I have hit a bump in the road the car has been stepping to the left! Seeing the state of the near side rear wheel I can now understand why!!!!! New tyres please Steve!!!!! (I know its my birthday this week, but I don't want them as a pressie !!!) Carole
letmeshowyou
At first i couldn't believe it...even blamed Carole's son for doing Burn-Outs or Donuts without me knowing I wouldnt underestimate this factor! What is the treadwear figure on the tyres Steve? In terms of places to get them - give Supertyres in Maldon a call but say you want to take them away. Get someone else to fit them... and you will save a fortune!
Steve W
NO. They always wear inside edges first like that, AND, nearside tyre more. it's the way the camber is set up on larger/more powerful RWD's and the road camber always makes the nearside wear worse (more unevenly) IF the tyres were set up to WEAR evenly across the tread they WOULDN'T grip properly (when cornering etc). The whole car was 4-wheel lazer aligned when they went on anyway ! ! !
Steve W
What is the treadwear figure on the tyres Steve? What do you mean ? How much HAVE they worn or how much SHOULD they have worn ? They've done ~5,000 miles from fitting. Haven't a CLUE about how they SHOULD wear, that's what i was hopin' someone would know ??? ALTHOUGH i believe the T1-Rs are relatively new.... maybe they took a step BACKWARDS with the new tyre ? Maybe the OLD design (T1-S ??) was 'better' ?????? Steve W
I suppose 5,000 miles isn't TOO bad ??? But, neither Carole or me have done ANY burnouts/donuts or even ECLAIRS ! ! We both drive fairly calmly really:baby: I never really did HIGH mileage in the TT so never got the 'feel' for tyre wear. IF someone tells me Toyos are fairly soft and 5,000 is a fair mileage then so be it. I'd PREFER ~10,000 if we're driving reasonably, but, don't want DANGEROUSLY hard tyres ! ! ! Khumos / Falkens / some Pirellis seem cheap ?? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?
letmeshowyou
on the sidewall it will say treadwear and a number - go look and tell me what it says!
Pig
as far as i know a burnout showes excess wear on the center rather than on an outside!
Steve W
on the sidewall it will say treadwear and a number - go look and tell me what it says! Goin to look now... never heard of a STATED tyre wear ?? Brill if they DO, it means i can get SOME idea with the new ones !!!
Steve W
as far as i know a burnout showes excess wear on the center rather than on an outside! SOUNDS right.... the tyre would 'BALLOON' slightly as it's spinning-up ??? so would emphasise the CENTRE of the tread !!
Steve W
on the sidewall it will say treadwear and a number - go look and tell me what it says! Just had a look... Treadwear 280 Traction AA Temperature A Does this mean anything to you????? Doesnt to me !!!!
Pig
I have a BRILLIANT idea. Lets go and find somewhere later. You can then make the most of your tyres before you change them!
letmeshowyou
I'd be up for that too!! 280 is relatively soft (but pretty average) however I have even softer on the back of mine (220) and relatively hard on the front (360) like I said... I'd consider the possibility of these burnouts. My rears have been on since about October and they're not even half worn yet!
Steve W
SOOOO, what do the figures REFER to then ?? You SURE the LOWER figure is SOFTER ? OR is it the AMOUNT of treadwear, ie. HIGHER=MORE WEAR = SOFTER ??
letmeshowyou
its a comparitive figure based on wear rate compared to a standard tyre (have a look on wikipedia if you want a proper explanation I dont wanna sound TOO geeky!) but lower is definitely softer (ie wears quicker)

I'd be up for that too!! YEAH, ME TOO, but, Carole still has to use it till ~ Saturday and if we POPPED 'em, she'd have to WALK all WEEK ! ! ! ! ! Whitesupraboy2
I suppose 5,000 miles isn't TOO bad ??? Your a NA same as me so 5,000 is poor, we dont get as much wheels spin due to stupid high BHP turbo's kicking in. My fronts did 14,000 miles and rears do at least 8,000 miles normally more. At least Carole said she would like them as a B'day present * * what has been stated may be slightly incorrect
Steve W
Just checked that Wikyyypediaphile site..... it forwards you to TireRack site... the Goodyear Eagle GS-3's are ALSO 280 ?? So they should wear about the same (most of the other popular ones are ~220 so all softer ?!?!?) BUT WikPEEDaFILE says the marking/rating is NOT LEGAL and the manufacturers can put whatever they LIKE on there ?!?!?!? so they can have a SOFT tyre but SAY it has a long tyre life !!!!!
