Drift Toy Wanted.....

Ok went through loads of classifieds looking for S14's apart from that one, they are all too expensive.....

Looks like it might have to be the S13, I prefer the look of them, more boxy 80's sort of shape, but just worry about the mechanical side of things.....

Still Gav, looks like we'll be S13 buddies.......fancy coming with to look over a few....

EDIT: Check these out....

S13's are never cheaper in the long run vs. an S14 or even an S14a. S13's have chronic rust problems, the sills are just scratching the surface - bootlid (check under spoiler it hides a multitude of sins), suspension turrets, floor pan, arches especially rear all rust badly. The best hope if you're sure you want an S13 is a facelift end of production '93 or '94 model, they seem to be a bit more solid. Or go for an import S13 180SX (from '91this has the stronger SR20DET engine similar to that in the S14) as these haven't been exposed to road salt, but they'll sell for £3k ++. The S13 also has mince brakes - worse than J spec Supra brakes. The S14 has very good 4pot front / 2 pot rears. I've done the S13 thing and I'm telling you to buy an S14 lol - that's saying something. You'll only end up repairing the S13 and spending a bomb fitting S14 parts to it - brakes, larger T28 turbo etc. etc.

The 1st ebay ad I'd avoid like the plague - something very strange going on with the breathers on the engine (likely trying to hide an oil consumption problem), no mention of an engine change at 140k which is well into big ends knackered territory. There's also a bleed valve on the turbo actuator hosing so the boost has been up probably to the limit of the standard T25 and it's still been on the standard crappy WMIC. It's also got an aftermarket exhaust tying in with the boost raising - so much for 'not been messed with other than an air filter'!!!

The 2nd ebay ad is the S14 - it looks like a genuine car. Only thing putting me off would be the high mileage but at least it looks honest.

3rd ebay ad is a decent more honest looking example of an S13 but that mileage puts me right off with regards big end failure.

4th ad is the best of the S13's you've posted given it's had a replacement engine, is a more solid late facelift model and has a decent turbo fitted (GT28R) which could see you to over 300bhp with the right fuelling / ECU chip combo (http://www.h-dev.co.uk). I'd be wary of the mileage claim of the replacement engine though, they're often not documented and Japan has never had a surplus of the CA18DET engine given they only used it there in '89 and '90.

Up to you of course!

Cheers,

Brian.

Oh Brian.....lol, I dont know what to do.....

What Im afraid with buying a S14 is, spending 3/4k on one and then taking it out and stuffing it into a piece of armco after restling with the left to the right, to the left, back to the right syndrome......;)

With a S13, if I get one for £800-£1100, stuff and it not as nice a car to cry over......

WTF do you have to be in Scotland.....lol

Im unsure.....:taped:

RE: the S14, at least you're likely to get to spend it on it rather than on fixing an S13 ;)

S13 ownership is much like RX-7 ownership - at club meets (I've been going to Scottish meets for years) you can tell the S13 owners because they're most often in their runabout as their S13's are off the road for one reason or another.

As for learning to drift in, as I mentioned at the start the S14 is the more natural and also more forgiving car. It's also structurally stiffer with less chassis flex - the S13 is bad in that respect.

There are the odd gems of S13's don't get me wrong and they're fun to drive but they are very few and far between and always always end up being costly.

Cheers,

Brian.

That looks a decent buy given the nice mods done and fresh engine / suspension. Bodywork needs sorting though, but still likely less so than the majority of S13's.

I have contacted the seller about it, its still for sale, you wouldnt believe where he is based, Kilmarnock, nr Glasgow.......lol

What a treck.....lol

Its got all the right bits for a drift toy, and has had some engine work, i will make two comments, first if its been used as purely a drift car then its had a hard life, so 5-7K since bottom end recon is more like 50K road use, and the other is the fact that he has bothered to fit a 1.6mm metal head gasket, and only runs 10PSI:rolleyes: i suspect a bit more than that;)

I don't know if anyone's mentioned this and you may not be able to stand being called a hairdresser but there are thousands of mk1 MX5's about from £1,200. Go for a 1.8 and get a £1,000 bolt on turbo and you've got a tail happy motor that anyone could learn to drift in. Quick too!

And Brian, you say to stay away from this one...

Sorry just trying to tie in what you said to which links I posted......which one is ok ?

That was this one:

Yep that S14a was a steal. I'm quite astonished it went for that and it makes me wanna keep an eye out for a new drift toy for next year!

The driftworks linked S13 I personally would avoid. It's had a hard life and a recent rebuild but doesn't mention anything other than big ends done bottom end wise. That is likely to mean it was rattling it's tits off and a new set of BE shells were chucked in. I've been involved in CA18DET strip downs and re-shelling them and I can tell you now that method usually only lasts about 10k miles before the big ends they be a knockin again! A proper job requires crank out, tolerances and clearances checked / crank ground and a matched set of BE shells fitted.

I'd look for a non drifted car and upgrade it to suit you and your level of skill as you start to drift and to me the best base is an S14/a.

Cheers,

Brian.

It just seems a lot for what looks a shed of a S13, but I suppose it set up ready to go and has quite a bit of mods done to it for drifting......

What about this:

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/215879.htm

It's an auto - 2 ways of looking at it:

1. It's a good buy as it's likely had an easy life because of it but it will need converted to manual if you're going to drift it. Cost of conversion isn't bad at all given the normal 5-speed manual in the S14 sells for about £100 ish.

2. You can't be bothered with the hassle of converting it to auto so buy a manual in the first place.

The guy I mentioned earlier now has an S14 after getting rid of his S13. Its a much nicer car and as tDR says a more natural car for the job. But you wont get a good one on your budget I dont think.

Check out the few S14's I have linked mate, £1500........;)

Ok, Im possibly interested in this one.....I know its a little more then I wanted to pay, but Im thinking the Tein adjustables could save me some work anyway.......

Brian any thoughts.....

http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/269757.htm

Or would you say the later S14 would be a better option like this one.......

I think it's really about getting one with as low a mileage as you can. The early S14 above looks good, not sure if you can get them down in price. The later model S14a has next to no info on it, other than it looks standard.

I'd concentrate on getting one with genuine low mileage.

Ok, after still swaying between an S13 and then back to the S14, I am deffo going for a S14, but I cant decide if to go for a new shape, I love the slanted look on the front with the headlamps....

This seems ok for the earlier shape.....

http://www.sxoc.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=315490

That one looks OK as well and has had a few essentials done - walbro pump, turbo gaskets (turbo / manifold gaskets are a PITA on the 200SX in general and a common problem but more so on the S13) along with braided lines for the turbo which will make future turbo replacement easier.

I'd try to get it with the nur spec and downpipe at a bargain price.

Cheers,

Brian.
