DaveK
It's based on your personal allowances - but can also be affected by other things. Mine is also affected (reduced) by my car allowance.

DaveK
Your tax code is nothing to do with your salary. You get basic allowances that we all get for how much you are able to earn tax free. But then it can be affected by : car allowance (and mine depends on how much petrol I used the year before, so will not be the same as other people I work with that have the same car allowance), healthcare if you get that through work, interest on your savings (only relevant if you fill in a tax return) etc.

Guest Killer Heels
Everytime the Revenue changes your tax code they have to write to you and the employer to notify why they are chaning it. This will be affect by your P11d (as mentioned above) but also if you have extra tax credits, rental income etc. You can request a copy from the revenue. If it is higher than you expect then it's worth getting a copy of the notice and checking it. If they change it again later in the year it can be a big hit i one month. If you phone them they may be able to tell you why over the phone.
