Ive gort a good idea of how to remove the headlights and dismantle it but all i really need is to remove the yellowing on the headlights. Has anyone been able to see the film (The bit that turns yellow) cracking and coming off? Whats the best solution for removing this film to clear my lights up please and how long should it take? Whitesupraboy2
there is no film you scrub like it says mate. the yellow is a changing in colour of the plastic, so as you scrub you remove a minute amount of plastic...i.e removing the yellow. Guest Chumpalot
I don't believe you've searched either. Your best bet is to stick them in the oven (no joke) for about 10 minutes. This will soften the sealent and you'll be able to prize the lenses from the lights. From there you'll be able to clean both the outsides and insides of the lense where the majority of the 'yellowing' occurs. T-Cut works well. Most use Megs Scratch X though. Hope this helps. Sparky
Anyways, i definately have a layer of plastic or film coming off the headlights. Will tcutting this rub off this layer? Do i have to tcut theother side of the lense?
Guest Chumpalot
I'm not winding you up. If you'd performed a search you would of read that many members on here have popped their headlights into the oven. It's a better (and safer) way of seperating the lights. Otherwise you have to get a heat gun and you risk damaging your lights if you're not careful. As for this 'film'. I'm really not sure what that could be. As WSB said above, the yellowing effect is the actual plastic changing colour due to dirt and condensation (don't forget these lights are quite old now!). Products such as T-Cut and PlasticX will take a very small layer of plastic off and restore them back to their original colour. For best results, do both inside and out. Perhaps you could get some pics up of this film you're talking about?
John B
No one is windin you up mate ! Stick the headlight in the oven at about 80-100 degrees untill the sealant softens then prize the apart and get cleaning ! Meguars scratch X is good stuff ! About £6 a bottle ! Just make sure when you put them together you seal them properly otherwise they will fog up ! Do another search on here there are some really good instructions available I know cos I have used them.....
Sparky
Sorry guys its been a hard crappy day today. When your as annoyed as me right now every comment seems that its being directed at me when its not. Ok thankyou for the advise. I still don't understand why the lense needs to come off though? DamanC
So you can clean the inside of the lens. The yellowing builds up in there too but im sure you know that, as you have already searched
Sparky
Haha very funny. The guide i found on here doesnt state why you clean the inside, or at least i didnt see it! Im just gonna buy new ones. Mine must be fooked if theres stuff peeling off the lense.
Guest Chumpalot
So sarcastic Daman.... As John said as well, make sure when putting them back together you seal them properly. You want them as airtight as possible otherwise all your hard work will be in vain. Wrap them up in a towel when you put them in the oven too

John B
Make sure when you put them in the oven that the sunday roast isn't in there either ! LOL.....Seriously it really is worth the effort and once the lights are apart you can spray the reflector to black which then gives the appearance of facelift headlights....... I did it on my old NA and glad I did as they came up really well...... Going to be doing mine on my new car in a week or too.
suprattgaz
FYI the UV from the sunlight yellows the lenses. The plastic used by Toyota was not UV stable. Best to keep them out of sunlight to stop it happening/ re-occuring. Before modding mine I tried to park it headlights facing north as much as possible (work, home). If gagaged this will dramatically reduce the yellowing.
