npotts
Hi Guys I have posted a problem concerning my warning light on this forum recently, and after receiving loads of replies (cheers for all the tips guys - you know who you are) I still cant seem to sort the problem. Anyway, I thought it might be worth trying one more time as I know how technical alot of you guys are after reading loads of the threads on this board!! Basically what happens, is that after about 2-3miles of starting the engine and driving off, I get the engine warning light appearing. It stays on till the car is turned off - a solid light, no flickering or flashing and no other lights on at the same time - just the engine light. Its the same light that appears with the handbrake light when you start the engine, and the handbrake is up. I have tried the following with no results after getting some advice from fellow Supranet members: 1 - Ensured the bonnet is closed properly 2 - Reset the ECU in the car 3 - Topped up the engine and brake fluid Is there anything else anyone can suggest that might point to the problem? Its really starting to worry me now!! Any further help would be well received!! It might benefit for me to say that my car is an NA. I dont have any active spoilers or anything like that. Thanks in advance for any other tips which might point to the problem! I appreciate your time guys!! Regards Nick
dangerous brain
I am assuming here that you mean the triangular one in the middle of the dial face of the speedo??? That is just a general caution light and not an engine warning light. The engine warning light is a yellow one on the right hand warning light cluster next to the oil pressure warning light. I think I asked you before if any of the lights come on that right hand warning panel when you turn the ignition to the normal driving position before you proceed to the starter position. Do three lights come on?? If you answer no to this then you need to take that warning panel out (No biggy you just undo the five screws holding the upper dash section on pull it towards you, unplug the three plugs two on the left side and one on the right side) unscrew the warning panel from the dash panel, open up the warning panel box (2 screws or 3 maybe) and resolder the joints on the PCB that have gone dry (come away from the board). Bash the warning panel back in and see what you get then. If you get an engine management light at the same time as the warning triangle then you will need to run the engine management diagnosis. This tells you how to do that You should then be able to come back to us with a code and we should be better able to help out. If the engine management light is working and you have looked at the bonnet, Brake fluid level, Oil level, ensured the doors and boot are shut properly, then you may be looking at a dodgy earth or short somewhere in the sensing system. npotts
Thanks for the reply dangerous brain, thats just the sort of info I was after. I will follow your notes and try to sort out the problem. Your right about the light by the way. It is the large red triangle in the centre of the display. I was under the impression that this light was the engine warning light, but as you say, thats something else!! I havent really tried just turning the key and observing the lights that come on, so I will do that next. From memory only the two oil lights come on at the right, and no yellow engine light, although I will check this first. Thanks for your time in writing up some notes - shows how good this sort of forum is for helping people like me who have very little knowledge with cars!! All the best mate Nick

npotts
Hi Jurgen I have observed the lights when I turn the ignition and here are the findings! There are two lights on the right hand side which appear, a red oil can and a yellow oil can. There is no engine warning light here, which would suggest a problem with the light. All the lights on the left hand side seem to light up okay..... I will follow dangerous brains technique in resoldering the engine light joints in a hope that it will then light up when the general warning light comes on. That way I can use the engine diagnostics technique to hopefully sort out a code for you guys to look at. All I need now is a soldering tool, and some free time this weekend to have a crack at it. It will be the first time I have done something like this, so fingers crossed I dont cock it up!! Thanks for all the help and advice guys - I owe you big time!! lust2luv
Didn't someone say recently that the engine light isn't supposed to come on at startup? I did think there was a third (fourth) light on the right though.. I was gonna check on mine this morning, but forgot. It's amazing what we see everyday but take no notice of. npotts
Oh right!! Well that throws a spanner in the works!!! Can anyone confirm what lights are supposed to appear when the ignition is turned?? I dont want to spend hours trying to resolder some joints if there is nothing wrong with it in the first place...... If there is supposed to be a fourth light then that also causes complications!! - I definately only have two oil lights that come on........very strange!! Thanks Nick
dangerous brain
Right then. There is a fourth light that is meant to come on IF you have a car with ABS, that light is the ABS light that strangely enough says ABS when it lights up. The engine management light (the one you have that is not currently working) should come on during the startup sequence for the same reason that all the others come on ie so you can physically see if the warning light is still working. You may find that the bulb is gone and that you don't need to re-solder any joints (to check this just swap over a bulb from the oil warning that you know is working and try it) but my money is on the dry joint. You can pick up a cheapo soldering iron for less than a tenner in loads of places, you might pay a bit more for one in halfrauds. To re-solder the joints all you need to do is wait for the iron to get hot, melt a little solder (try and get the stuff that has flux cores in it) onto the tip so that the heat transfers easily. Touch the tip of the soldering iron to the solder on the board where the pins from the socket join the board on the opposite side to the side the pins go in if you get my drift. You should see the solder melt almost immediately and spread out a little, it will at this point re-take to the board. Remove the soldering iron allow to cool (takes a nano-second to go solid) JOB DONE Repeat on all pins.
npotts
Cheers for the reply mate. I dont have ABS on my Supra so that would explain the lack of light!!! Thanks for the tips on how to solder too. I will give it a go over the weekend. Just goes to show how helpful this site is - another excellent response!!! Thanks for all your help guys - I will repay you all one day!! Nick
