nick_karkie
Hi, as the title says, need cover to be able to drive from England to Europe whenever I want, not just for 90 days. The AA and RAC do this but are far too expensive, Direct Line want about £850 (I will be 28 by the time my insurance starts with 6 years no claims and no convictions in the last 5 years). Does anyone know any companies?
dangerous brain
I have yet to find one which is a major PITA considering I work in Holland full time pretty much but on a contract so could be marched out anytime. I used a company called stuart collins that guaranteed me over the phone a permanent green card for out here but reading through the small print it has the same 90 day restriction as everyone else. If you come across one then let me know chap as cycling through cars here is becoming a real bind.
nick_karkie
I would say just go for one which offers insurance all year round, do not worry about the small print but make sure you choose a company that doesn't require you to call them when you need to travel, then they don't know whether you are in England or anywhere else, but they dont really care. Norwich Union RAC Direct Line. There must be companies in Holland that offer insurance of british plates, there are companies here in spain that do it. dangerous brain
I asked about insurance from british plates and nope its a no go. Reason being its a tax evasion point. Over here vehicle road tax is treble or more what it is in UK. They won't insure a non-dutch car here so you have to pay the tax. Thats all well and good if you actually drive in Holland all the time but I just don't. I live 2 km away from the Belgian border and the car usually sits on the drive as I cycle to work. We do all our shopping in Belgium as its cheaper and our nipper goes to playschools in Belgium. All I can do is exactly what you say, keep the car here, limit my traveling this side to limit accident potential and hope for the best.
