Guest challabrat Posted July 18, 2007 Share Posted July 18, 2007 Ok.. so heres the deal, picked up my new supra yesterday, its a 93 jap import sz auto with 40k on the clock, virtually standard, apart from aftermarket wheels, and a recently fitted kenwood double din head unit and a cat 1 alarm immobiliser. no problems there when the guy turned it over at his house it didnt start maybe as quick as id like, but it started and ran fine. I drove it some 250 miles home without a hitch , seemed a bit more sluggish than id expected for such a powerful car, but i put that down to it being an auto and that funky overdrive button. got it home and was driving around town when i noticed that every time i stopped, at traffic lights etc three warning lights came on: the blown tail light one, the hot catalyst one and the battery one, plus the big warning triangle however when i pulled off again, they all went out. this morning it didnt quite turn over fast enough as if the battery was low, and those four warning lights came on, unitl i pulled away. it drove the two miles to work fine and sat in traffic happily. i got to work, switched off the engine, tried to restart it and there wasnt enough juice. to get it home i jumped it with a battery pack and it drove back rather sluggishly, with the auto box being rather jerky and the power steering the same. once home i swapped the battery for the one in my celica which was running fine yesterday, and drove to a friends house five miles away. no problems until i stopped, then the four warning lights came on along with the oil temperature warning light. i turned the engine off, tried to restart it and there was nothing. /vbb/images/smilies/bbcode_shock.gif i jumped it with the battery pack again and drove it home, with all five warning lights on the whole way. /vbb/images/smilies/bbcode_oops.gif just as i got outside my house, the engine cut out and wouldnt restart even with the battery pack attached. /vbb/images/smilies/bbcode_sad.gif i put the battery back in the celica and it was too flat to start that.. In summary for anyone who couldnt be bothered to read my life story: 1)battery, tail light, catalyst and oil temp warning lights all on, along with warning triangle. 2)car completely drains a battery within ten miles... 3) help! robin Posted July 18, 2007 Share Posted July 18, 2007 I would get some oil in there ASAP if its low. Check the level on the dipstick. If you dont have a multimeter then all you can do really is call out the AA if your a member or visit a garage and get them to check the charging current. It sounds like your battery isnt charging properly. Either the alternator isnt turning or genrating enough current or maybe the connections on the battery are dodgey. Guest challabrat Posted July 21, 2007 Share Posted July 21, 2007 charged the battery up, made a shim so the the terminal fit properly, took the stereo out and found sum d*ckhead had made an awful shoddy job of splicing in the wiring for the bodged on fog light.. so i ripped the stupid thing out and did a bit of rewiring.. seems ok, though i havnt driven it much and the stereo hasnt gone back in yet. Fingers crossed it was just an earth short.. so next question.. anyone know how to fit a set of uk lights with the fog light built in, before mot time? cheers for all your help so far guys Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Matt Harwood Posted July 21, 2007 Share Posted July 21, 2007 Just re-wire the JDM lights so that the inner brake lights become the fogloghts when you activate the foglight switch. kieren1234 Posted July 21, 2007 Share Posted July 21, 2007 It did sound like an alternator belt as it done this on my old car and a few warning lights come on. However with the light out warning sign that is generally on all the time on mine untill i brake. Not sure why though. good luck fixing it.
