far
Can I sell the car and then apply for my private plate to be put on certificate or do I need to do this first? Anyone know what the score is?
DaveK
Surely you need to do it before you sell the car?
michael
I've just done this - you need to take it off the car before you sell it as you'll need to send the V5 and MOT to the DVLA with a cheque for £105 to put it on retention. You need form V778/1 to retain the plate or V317 if you are going to put it straight onto another car. Forms have to go through your local office. http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/BuyingAndSellingAVehicle/PersonalisedRegAndNumberPlates/DG_4022575 I applied for mine to be done last Friday and the new tax disk, MOT and V5 came through yesterday with an official letter to take to a numberplate place so they can make up the replacement reg (mine is going back onto it's original so I already have them), it takes them longer to sort the plate out, up to 4 weeks apparently but you can sell the car once the other bits come back. If you sell it with it on then the new owner takes ownership, they can put the plate on retention and act as the "grantee" with you as the "nominee" - you'd have no rights to the plate at all but they can get it put onto a car you have registered in your name which then makes it yours again. I'd want some kind of signed legal doc to make sure they do this though
