jot_ie
HI all I am hoping to install a down pipe on my 98 jap spec Supra vvti Difficult and expensive items to find here in Ireland. Anyone in the uk able to supply to ireland.? Is it a diy job? I am sure that the topic has been covered somewhat in other threads, but some info relating to a downpipe install and my stage of mods would be great. I would also like to know what other mods should be done at the same time, as its probably not as simple as bolting in a new pipe, is it? Next I hope to install a FMIC - any suggestions appreciated, i.e brands, pitfalls, other bits that should be done at the same time At some stage, maybe after xmas I hope to upgrade the injectors, fuel pump etc. I hope to be in the 700-800 bhp range when done Wishful thinking maybe? List of current mods HKS Super Power Flow Induction System HKS Super Drager Muffler Exhaust HKS Front Pipe HKS Intercooler Piping System HKS Electronic Valve Control (EVC) Any assistance much appreciated. John (relatively new and still learning) Hi John... i think that wishfull thinking, i have Hybrids, Full decat, larger injectors, and pretty much what you have listed - and I'm no where near 700 bhp, never mind 800. If you want those figures - you'd want to be strapping a single turbo on!
geoffvalenti
Hi John Basically, after looking at your list of mods, all you've really done is upgraded the exhaust and had it decatted. Thats going to give you an increase over stock. Upping the boost with a boost controller, assuming that its not already overboosting after the decat, will give you a bit more, but I'd be surprised if you could get much more than a reliable 400 bhp in total, without starting to spend serious money. Things like FMIC, fuel pump and injectors, with a fairly stock setup, don't themselves give much (any) additional power. They are there to as a safeguard and to enhance additional mods like boost increase, or single turbo/hybrid conversion. 700-800 bhp is a very tough target to meet and certainly not something that you're ever going to achieve with the stock turbo setup. Talk to Dude, his car doesn't seem to be running badly at the moment
jot_ie
Thanks guys Greatful for you taking the time. As I said I am relatively new to all this. Not helped by the rarity of local (here in dublin) supra knowledge I thought it may be a case of wishful thinking. Anyway, Have to start somewhere. Getting back to the downpipe. Anyone know where I could get a quality one, other mods if any necessary for installation etc. John p.s. the turbo upgrade I fancy would be a pair of big twins, keeping the sequential operation. Still want to keep the car as an every-day driver. Maybe 700-800bhp is a bit ambitious.
qaisar
u can try chris wilson, and the traders with their own sections on here as im pretty sure they all do downpipes for the vvti
Nick
You already have the HKS downpipe which replaces one of the CAT's but you'll need another to replace the other. Chris Wilsons are excellent quality IMO. If you haven't got an FCD (Fuel Cut device) you'll need one of these too to let you run more boost, Thor's come highly recommended (http://www.thor-racing.co.uk/). Have a look down by the ECU in the passenger footwell, your car has a few HKS bits on it so it's possible one's already been fitted. How much boost are you running at the moment? If your intercooler is in good condition then you should be fine upping the boost but to be on the safe side you should really consider a replacement SMIC/FMIC and/or water injection. 1.2bar is widely considered to be the max to run on stock turbos to be safe. You won't be able to run big twins in sequential, all you can do is fit hybrids. The twin kits, such as the HKS GT2835 kit, run in parallel. Do a search and you'll find a few discussions or hybrids vs big single/twin upgrades, different people have different views You'll better off with a single kit to be honest, certainly the cheaper option and there's a lot more choice when it comes to kits. But, then you've got to decide how far you want to go and how you want to set it up.... As far as power goes you're limited to the fuel you run really. Don't believe all the figures you read in car magazines, most are plucked from thin air, seems every Supra out there is running 700-1200BHP plus on 98RON fuel 600BHP is a more realistic figure. jot_ie
Thanks guys for all your help and comments. Much appreciated. Nick, just been looking at the pics of your car. She's a beauty. I am Currently running .8 bar on low and .9 bar on high boost. Very low I know, But I dont have a boost meter yet, and honestly dont know enough about it to push too far. Do you think I would be ok with say 1 bar low boost and 1.1 or so for high boost. Stock turbos and intercooler with hks hardpipes and hks iridium sparks. Chris dropped me a line so I will be talking to him with regard to the downpipe. Thanks again to all. Any of you guys ever here in Ireland be sure to let me know.
