jaymdee
What with the budget and looking to the future, what cars, similar to the Supra, could you buy which could have been registered before the CO2 tax bands were introduced (March 2001). I was thinking of getting a new style RS4 in a few years, but I can forget that now
geoffvalenti
What because of £200 extra road tax? With a car like that its just the tip of the running costs iceberg. Ok none of us want to pay £400 road tax, but it would take more than £200 a year extra to stop me from driving a decent car rather than a run of the mill POS. Just planning ahead as it's open to be continually raised. At least the old style taxation is lumped in with 1.6 engines, so we won't suddenly be charged £1000. jaymdee
Right, I've been having a look and have come up with this list: Audi RS4 (first gen) BMW M3 E36 BMW M5 E39 Honda NSX Jaguar XJR/XKR Lotus Elise (S2, old engine) Maserati 3200 GT Mercedes CLK55 AMG Mercedes E55 AMG Mitsubishi Evo VI Nissan Skyline GTR34 Porsche 911 993 Porsche 911 996 Subaru Impreza P1 Subaru Impreza STI ver 5/6 Subaru legacy B4 RSK Toyota Supra vvti (Obviously!!) Toyota Aristo Vertex TVR Cerbera TVR Chimera TVR Tuscan I take geoffvalenti's point, but thought I'd have a look to see what cars you could buy which would still fit into the old style tax rules from pre March 2001. TBH, if I really wanted a newer performance car I would factor the tax into the running costs before buying it, but I like looking to see what's available. geoffvalenti
Well that looks like a fairly impressive list. You can add the best looking TVR to it (Griffith) ATM I still don't think you can beat the Supra for bang for the buck performance, maybe in a few years time it'll be eclipsed by some of the later cars, but considering its age, its holding up well. I do take your point that the rate is open to be hiked at every opportunity, but unfortunately progressive governments have been tightening up on car "fun" ever since I can remember In a lot of ways, the older cars are more fun to drive, because they lack a lot of the modern electronic "safety" devices. If you're looking of real fun, and want to stick one on the chancellor, have a look for pre 1973 US muscle cars. 7 litre V8 power, and FREE road tax
