Right guys, I desided to fix up my mountain bike that had sat in the garden for a year as i need to get fit. I ran across the car park the other day and was out of breath! played football for 20mins with some mates and hurt for 3days so its time i did something about it. im not fat, 5ft11 tall and 11.5stone so fairly slim. i dont smoke and dont really drink.

Can any experts give me some advise as im going to use cycling as my main type of exercise i just want to feel better im myself and feel like i have abit more stregth and energy.

Cheers

Duane

Start drinking and smoking, that will help with the sparrow knee like muscles. If you do it right you should be dead by about 60 :)

Seriosly thou, build up your cardio routine, maybe a few weights latter on. Sign up to leasure world and come down with me :)

If you plan on using the bike on the road then the first thing I'd strongly suggest is changing the horrible knobbly things over for some 'City Slicker' type tyres.

Plan some circular routes and get a rough idea of distances, then cycle them once every three days at first (give your 'bits' time to recover).

As you get fitter and more into it you'll start to teach yourself about what you need to do but if you're serious you might want to consider getting a cycle computer so you can start timing your rides and measuring distances.

The main thing is to enjoy it and don't let it become a chore :) :) :)

Cycling magazines have training programmes in there for novices.

As already stated, dont over do it too soon otherwise you'll piss yourself off, build up gradually.

To help build the leg muscles do some simple exercises:

Stand with your legs shoulder width apart and squat down till your thighs are at right angles to your lower leg.

Stand at the bottom of the stairs (if you live in a bungelow your fooked) step up one step and then back down.

Stand on the first step with heels off the step, then raise heels until you feel slight discomfort.

Repeat these exercises everyday as well as cycling.

Before you know it you'll have legs like han shanks.
