Strange request i know but a work collegue of mine has just moved into a new house and there is a patch of carpet at the bottom, and up the stairs of very strong smelling cat pee. Shes tried all sorts to get rid of it (Baking soda, steam cleaning, detergent) but to no avail. Anyone got any ideas for getting rid of the smell??

Depends how long its been there, and how often its been slashed on .

If a tom was doing it, you might as well ditch the carpet - not a great solution, but most cleaning methods never get rid of it.

Check under the carpet - chances are the slash has permiated into the underlay and possibly the floor as well!

If she's got her own cat... ditch the carpet, otherwise her cat will slash there as well :-(

She needs a strong anti-bacterial solution. It won't stop smelling until you kill the bacteria. Should be able to find a good one at any decent supermarket or failing that a large pet store.

She may need to work the solution into the floor boards too.

You need an emzyme / bacteria-based solution - as Jake says most supermarkets and pet shops should be able to help. White vinegar is supposed to be one way of doing it but I've had the best results with the enzyme stuff.

Soak the affected area and allow it to dry... smell gone.

Obviously fresh stuff would need blotting, cleaning as much as possible with warm water and then treating but as this is old just bung some of the solution on and leave it.

It might also be worth hiring a carpet cleaner too.
