Conrad
Anyone ever been anywhere in South America? I sold my Supe a couple months ago to go and live in Canada for a while and learn to snowboard. I've been messed around loads over my work Visa so have decided to go backpacking in SA instead. Anyone ever done this or been anywhere in South America? What's worth seeing etc. I think I'm gonna go to Argentina first then work my way up. Good steak in Argentina apparently! Tannhauser
Argentina gets my vote. I was there two years ago. It's still very cheap to travel in post-recession and currency devaluation. And yes, the steak is unbelievable. It's very varied: The barrios of Buenos Aires (from high chic through crumbling belle epoch to shanty towns). You can pop acoss to Montevideo apparently. High altiplano scenery of North West (e.g. Huamahuaca) Tropical rainforest in North East and Iguescu (sp?) Falls 'Lake District' (Neuquen? Something like that) in South East for skiing in season, further south for trips to see calving glaciers. Patagonia for a challenging road trip Atlantic coast for whale and seals (I think that's there where the orcas beach themselves to catch seals) Think carefully about driving there. About 30% of road are properly surfaced. Major routes are fine, but trips to little places may take longer than expected.

Yeah Argentina definitely looks like the first port of call for me then. Getting real excited, a lot more than I was meant to be going to Canada. So Chris, I take it you weren't so welcome in Argentina when you went?

As far as I can tell, the antipathy seems to have gone. Nobody seemed to have any problems with us being British. Just don't refer to 'The Falklands' as 'The Falklands' There's a fair amount of upheaval there, though, so best to keep your eyes open if visiting. The night I left Salta, there were violent clashes between people in mourning for the Pope and militant teachers! Also, there were unruly demonstrations in Buenos Aires about something-or-other.
