Laptop Prob 'DATA EXECUTION PREVENTION' msg

far

Recommended Posts

....on one of the laptops everytime we go into 'My Computer' or even control panel we are getting a pop up saying

'Data Execution Prevention'

To help protect your computer ,Windows has closed this program.

Is there anyway DEP can be disabled?

I have tried to boot from cd and install a fresh copy of XP I get as far as the windows setup (blue) screen and it starts loadiing files but then it says

'A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer'

Is the laptop completely fooked or is there a solution?

If you right-click My Computer do you still get the same issue?

If not can you select properties?

If this works open the advanced tap and click the settings button under the "performance" bit. You should see a DEP tab in the new window that pops up, is the top or bottom option of the two selected? The top one should be fine for most people but has this laptop had the second one selected but no exceptions added?

Anyway, that won't be much help, I'm just curious... onto the next bit...

I think you can change Boot.ini to have an "AlwaysOff" option to disable it, time to open notepad :)

Look for the "/NOEXECUTE" entry and change it to:

/NOEXECUTE=ALWAYSOFF

(backup the boot.ini first so you can't blame me when it goes wrong :))
