Advice Wanted - Budget graphics card for my pc

Recommended Posts

I've got a GeForce3 Ti200 graphics card at the moment, which has given me no problems at all in the last 5 years that I've had it.

Im looking to upgrade it to something newer/better but I don't have a clue what is good or bad these days or how much i'll need to spend. I'll be mostly using it for games but don't get on the pc as much as I used to so don't wanna shell out for a brand new all singing all dancing etc etc blah blah.

Anyone got any suggestions?

I am assuming that you still have the motherboard that you ran that card on and you want to use that still ?

If so you are limited in what you can get because you are still using AGP and not the newer PCI express.

Best bet is to check out eBay as you have people upgrading the older AGP type cards for the newer ones.

Yeah its on the same motherboard, a red storm motherboard, amd athelon xp 1800+ (actual speed about 1550 I think)

On a side note...

I bought a new case a few months back with the intention of getting all of the bits together to build a new one, I bought new HD, DVD RW etc and was gonna poach the memory out of my other two pc's. The only trouble is I don't know what motherboard & processor I need for this new case.

Its a standard sized case, will any motherboard fit it?

To be honest mate, if your using a card that is that old anyway, whats the rest of your pc like?

I cant see the point of just a graphics card update, considering your pc is likely to be just as dated. But about the best AGP card you can get would be something like an nvidia 6800gt or something like that. Think they made a 7800gs in agp too if you can find that.

Both good cards. But I cant see a scenario for you upgrading to either card.

If you want it for games, then the rest of your pc will limit you sevearly anyway. If you want it for Vista, then again I doubt the rest of your PC will be very windows vista friendly, and neither of the cards i suggested are direct X 10 complient. Which is basically what vista will be using shortly.

If you could tell me why you want to change your card, and give me the rest of your specs of your pc, i could advise you further.

Well there are different standard sixe cases, but i assume you mean midi atx tower case, which is what most people use. Yes any ATX motherboard will fit it.

Looking at your specs, I cant see any reason for you to upgrade to a better graphics card. You will just be wasting your money, as your pc will be sevearly bottleknecked on your cpu and to some degree motherboard.

Best save your cash and save for a whole new system. You can build quite a respectable system for under £500 these days. Assuming you can re-use parts such as dvd drives and hard drives, which dont date as fast as other components.

Cheers guys, been a big help :)

I've seen base systems on ebay which have a fairly high spec processor & motherboard but come without hard drive, cd drives etc. So you can simply use your old machine as a donor for some of the hardware (cd/dvd/floppy/HD)

Are they as good as they sound or is it going to be a thrown together pile of cheapo bits?

One of these for example...

I will have my system for sale

Asus SLI SE motherboard

AMD X2 4400

1gb coirsair Ram

The only thing that you'll need is a graphics card and HDD etc

^^^^ that would be a massive jump in performance for you, providing the price is right of course. ;)

I would shy away from the eBay barebones offerings as the components used are usually very cheap.

Yes unfortunately they will be utter shite,

The best thing to do is buy all the bits separately yourself and put it together yourself.

Now I can tell you have never done this before, and your probably thinking, omg thats too technical for me. But seriously its a piece of piss, and you will end up with such a better computer for it.

Best thing to do is ask a mate who knows what they are doing to help you. Failing that, there are so many "how to's" on the net now explaining the steps for building a new PC from scratch.

It really does sound like a bit of a job, but if you take your time and follow some good guide lines it really is easy.

Hardest part is putting the fan onto the cpu because you usually have to push down quite hard and its a test of nerves lol! But ive never had a problem yet with a system ive build or rebuilt over the years.

Seriously though, once you have built your own, youll never buy one again from PC world, or staples, comet, ebay or wherever people get pcs from these days.

Just take your time over a sunday afternoon with the tv on and youll be fine.

yes all amd x2's are duel core.

One thing I must say about buying this kit from Daston is that the processor and heatsink/fan will already be fitted into the motherboard. Which is definitely a plus for you making th job of building a better pc much easier.

If you buy that setup from him I would advise on getting a 7900gs graphics card. As these are pretty powerfull for the money about £120 on ebay considering top spec cards at the moment are £400. they are extremely powerful for the money!

One thing you will definitely need to get though is a decent 500+ watt power supply.

By decent I mean go for a leading brand and spend about £30-50 on it. If you buy one for a tenner then the things just blow up. And ive seen this happen a lot.

I would suggest the Hyper PSU rated at 580 watts, very good Power supply.

Thanks mate, very helpful. Im afraid im a bit of a noob when it comes to pcs, Ive always had them but apart from fitting a new drive and some memory here and there I don't really know the ins and outs of building one.

Building one yourself is no more harder than that. Just taking more stuff out and putting more stuff in..

Just more of the same.

As I said, if you buy Dastons setup, providing the price is good. All you are simply doing is screwing the motherboard into the case and connecting the power leads from the PSU and they only fit into certain holes, so its impossible to connect the wrong thing to the wrong place! He will have done the work for you fitting the processor and memory to the motherboard.

So its Very simple! Just remember about what I said about the power supply (PSU). Go for an Antec or Hyper, or something like that. This is arguably the most important component of your computer, spend at least £30 on this component.

I would have thought Daston would give you a good price, and if not, people sell similar setups on ebay if you look carefully.

Motherboard about £50

Memory about £70

Processor about £120

All used prices of course, i bet you paid a lot more than that when you first bought those bits! Ahh computers, computers!

I would probably try selling them all together for around £220 or less, something like that. But thats me.
