hiten55
start - run - type "msconfig" - click startup - untick all you dont want to startup. Be carefull though - only turn off those that youre 100% about. turning off a windows essential one could stop the system booting. Also worth checking: Start - all programs - startup (remove any in here by deleting them) That should do it
Schtuv
I have several programs that load on start up. How do I stop this? I run Windows XP. [+] Hold down the left shift key after you log into the computer (of when it starts showing the task bar) - this works for some programs ... [+] Right click on the start button, select 'Open All Users', in the window that appears open the 'Programs' folder, then open the 'Startup' folder, delete what you don't want to start. [+] Right click on the start button, select 'Open', in the window that appears open the 'Programs' folder, then open the 'Startup' folder, delete what you don't want to start. [+] Click Start, select Run, and type in 'regedit'. Navigate down to HKEY CURRENT USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and delete keys for what you don't need. The names can be cryptic, but in the key data you can see the path to the files which gives away what they are. [+] Use add/remove programs in control panel to remove the software
geoffvalenti
Hang on guys, before we start getting too techincal, wouldn't it be a good idea to see what programs are in the startup folder Col, go to Start/all Programs/Startup and see what you've go in there to start with.. Right click and delete any you don't want to run on startup. If that doesn't cure it then I suppose you can get involved in msconfig, but as hiten55 says, make sure you know what you're turning off before you do it. As an aside, did you get my text? Marty
i use this.... http://www.download.com/WinPatrol/3000-8022_4-10592461.html?tag=lst-0-1 Its really good, and doesnt use much memory (5mb), it'll tell you when things are trying to put themselves in the startup menu, if somethings changing file types etc, and gives you the option to stop them. You can also remove things off the startup, scheduled tasks, etc if need be. Plus its free the version you pay for has more features, but the free one is more than good enough IMO Its stopped me getting a fair few viruses
