Calibrating speedo

I'm not sure my speedo is displaying the right speed.

Ok, I've only had the car a month and I'm not used to it yet perhaps, cos it's a big car and deceptivly quick... but I know that I used to do 85mph on the motorway and overtake loads of cars. Now in my Supra I set cruise at 85mph and get overtaken loads.

Also, doing 30mph, learners are getting away infront of me. And I presume they're under instruction to do 29mph or so.

So... I'm not sure it's right. BUT, good news - I've got my TRL DSC + TSD!

I'm going to be fitting it tomorrow (later today) and I was really wondering (after my prolonged preamble) how the hell to accurately calibrate the speed. How will I know if it's right?

I thought I'd get a friend to do a 30mph and 70mph check in another car I trust the speedo on. Maybe that's not accurate enough.

I don't have GPS, so any suggestions? Is this a service a garage would offer? Somehow?

Thanks. As always. :D

Got mine 100% accurate now. Gimme a shout on Monday and we'll sort it out.

Is your a manual or auto?

Mine is an auto, I set mine like when you in third gear, rev is on 2k you should travel about 40 mph, 3k rev should travel 60, and 4k rev should travel about 80, I fill its preety much about right speed to me.

Any one has any comment.

cheers

His is an auto.

Seems like you're still guessing whether it's right or not. To get it right you need to go by something other than RPMs anyway. Different Rev Counters may read differently and also differences in tyre sizes, tyre brands and even tyre wear will affect the speedo accuracy. That's why I like the TRL SLD and its adjustment feature; you can recalibrate your speedo with a GPS and get it spot-on.

Hi guys,

I know Jake, it needs all that to do it right, but if you havent have all those equipment, that's the easiest way to do and not too far off, buy that speed convertor form Peter at TRL which is adjustable but no needs to because onces put on it is right, I mean mine is auto, on top gaer I get 60 on 2K rev, 120 on 4K, on one of those guys picture on 6K rev they get about 175, so Im not far off at all.

And you can do it just by yourself.

cheers

I have an auto also. Just fitted a TRD 320 kmh speedo to my gauge cluster. How do I calibrate it? Should I fit the TRL TSD, then do it? I'm not converting to MPH so the DSC will be left unwired. Where is the adjustment on the TSD?

I may be able to borrow a friend's GPS to do it properly too. Do you just leave the plastic off the gauge cluster and then touch the needle to the proper GPS indicated speed as your driving?

Thats where i have my say.

I am, however doing the kph to mph conversion and TSD at the same time after crimbo. Today i bought this:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4594967327&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&rd=1

My question is; Will the conversion from kph to mph automatically work on the new dial? ie, do you think the needle will be pointing at 30mph when travelling at 30mph? Because, right now, the needle would be pointing at about 10 o'clock on my current setup.

Does that make sense?

That's how I did it. Well actually I got my passenger to put the needle in place, it's bloody difficult to do it yourself while driving.

Ok, thanks Jake. I'll throw the cluster in tonight and then try to borrow a GPS from a buddy tomorrow. Finishing the caliper/disc painting boar of a chore now and fitting newly refurbished wheels shod with new Pirellis. Can't wait to drive it tomorrow, it's been on jack stands for a month now.
