Hi all,

Just going into the wireless age and need to buy a router for my laptop (latest spec laptop so no issues on connection speeds etc..)

Can anyone advise on the best make of router? and possible prices/set up time etc..

Thanks all

Personally I use Netgear stuff for all my customers. They're pretty easy to set up (the routers, not the customers :D) and I've not had any issues with reliability.

Depending on the speed of the adapter in your laptop, something like a DG834G or DG834GT should do the trick

Make sure you use WPA-PSK (or WPA2) security with a 5tr0ng pa55w0rD

I have a Netgear router, it was dead simple to setup and seems very reliable. It occasionally needs a re-boot say once every 2 months. But so would you if you were on 24/7. ;)

Also setup a Linksys for a friend and that was quite easy too. Although it did take a while to figure out why it was giving slow speeds, I had the settings on use either B or G mode, when switched to use G mode always he was getting 2Mb constant then.

Also setup a Dell one which was a PITA

i bought a 108mbps wireles netgear wgt634u router and was dropping line all time.gone back to rj45 crossover cables for 2 computers sharing net.

can you protect your wireless signal so nobody can pick signal and use your bandwidth?

good when they working though

Yes that is what Geoff is saying above use WPA-PSK security with a good password i.e. on the neighbours won't guess. ;)
