far
heres what the control panel screen looks like for the router
Henk
Hi m8, it will be stored on the router itself, though to be honest WEP is not really very secure anyway, it's about as useful as a chocolate teapot in keeping your network safe. Don't forget to add the MAC address of the new laptop to the router as well if you enabled MAC filtering. I have a buffalo cable router myself so cannot help you with which menu it will be under on your router.
DaveK
It's key 0 isn't it? It looks the same kind of setup as my Netgear one - you can enter a phrase and it will generate the key, or you can type in hex.
Henk
Just seen your control panel, if you cannot remember what you typed in as the passphrase, then just create a new one, no issues. WPA encryption or WPA2 would protect you better.
DaveK
It's a good idea to hide your SSID as well.
JustGav
You guys are WAY too paranoid you know.... PS : Hiding SSID doesn't stop anything these days, even drivers can see it through the SSID hiding.
Wez
You should be able to type any of those keys listed from 0 to 3, you should also enable hide SSID. WPA with PSK, then enable MAC filtering and SSID broadcast disabled would be better if your box supports it.

Maybe - but it's all about minimising the risk. If you were a car thief and saw two similar cars parked together - one with unlocked doors and the keys in the ignition, and one locked with a cat 1 alarm, which one would you steal? DaveK
I like a challenge In that case, I always park my car with the doors unlocked and the keys in the ignition!

Yeah, and if you put too much protection in, it makes it more of a challenge. To be fair, my firewall runs a captive portal style system, so any random person getting past my weak 64bit key, still gets stuck on my firewall with 64k speed internet access...
