markjodrell
hope someone can help. just got my TT, I am worried that the first turbo may not be boosting as I cannot hear any whistle at all when reving up. When I rev to 4k the whistle is there then. I thought you should hear the 1st turbo whistle at around 1500 revs. Any way of checking this out. getting quite concerned 1996 tt pre facelift 43k any comments appreciated:(
Steviekid
Any way of checking this out. Fit a boost gauge. Any cheapo one will do to check it out. Does it feel like it's lacking power? Also check it's not been set up to run in parallel.

markjodrell
should the whistle be quite obvious at 1500 revs?
Rayman
Yeh unless youve got a really loud exhaust. The wistle is audible about 1.5k upwards. Open the window and drive and its noticeable to yourself also to pedestrians. If you set off pretty sharpish from a standstill up to about 30mph and then let of the gas the stock bov will whoosh, how quick does the car feel it should feel very quick low down, very responsive!? Loads of low down torque with that turbo being so early. Maybe your turbos are set to run in parallel instead of in secuence? As it can be changed but not sure what the difference feels like? markjodrell
apart from the lack of whistle are there any other tell tale signs, is it possible for the first turbo to simple not work??

markjodrell
hi again m8, just been outside again, had the bonnet up , if I hit the accelerator hard and release at just under 3k revs I can hear the stock bov, a obvious hiss, is this going to be the first turbo or the second turbo. Re the power , since Ive had it all its done is throw it down so I have not been able to do a really fast start, although I did have the back end twich out on a round about on very moderate throttle. It seemed to go pretty well but ive never driven or been in a tt before so have nothing to compare it to without the first turbo would it be REALLY sluggish? markjodrell
excuse my ignorance , re the boost guage. with one fitted would it go so far up the guage on the first turbo then go higher as the next turbo kicks in? 1 - 5 the 5 - 10 kinda thing? Rayman
I think they show 0.4 from the first turbo and 0.8/9 from the second turbo, foot obviously flat to floor! When it shows 0.8 both turbos are online i think. But you should able to see it boostin even just touching the throttle as the guage starts in negative figures. Give it a dab of the throttle and youll see the gauge move into positive boost pressure.
markjodrell
Rayman thank for your help and you patience much appreciated, just hope all is well as it could be an expensive job. I suppose if the roads are dryish 2morrow I could try a 0-60 time and if its 6 secs or below both turbos are working, would you say that would be a reasonable test ?? Yeh absolutley, autos are a little sluggish off the line but once you get off the line it should take off and pull you back hard in your seat. You should here the turbo sounding straight away and then over 4K revs the straight 6 starts to sing and drowns out the turbos! If you not used to big bhp cars like me it feels like a rocket ship basically, scary at first Lol:p ! What was your previous car?

I have oem filter apexi fitted so mine roars a lot but does whislt when accelerating Rich
