Ian W
Have been getting really strange noises from my engine for the last couple of days. first one is a clicking or tapping noise coming from the top of the engine making it quite noisy to listen to. i'm sure it never used to be like this and as i say has only started in the past couple of days. anything to worry about? second one, is a squeel coming from one or more of the belts. it's loud enough that i can still just hear it from inside the car with the windows up and obviously squeels 'faster' (ooh err!) the more i increase the revs. linked at all to the first? anything to worry about? more importantly, are the problems easy to fix?! Max Headroom
Does the clicking start when you press the throttle?
Ian W
Does the clicking start when you press the throttle? Seems to do in constantly mate, although iirc it increases pace with engine speed. Max Headroom
I had a similar thing I THINK sounded like a tap tap tap when I pushed the throttle, and it sounded like it was coming from the top of the engine. In the end it was No 1 crankshaft bearing that was on its way out (and went) and I got a rebuilt engine.
Mike M
Mine is the same just now, squeeking from the power steering pump that increases with revs but goes away after a few miles. And someones hidden an f reg 1.1 fiesta behind my dash. I think it's just injector noise but I seem to be noticing it more at low speed. Does it hot or cold and always sounds the same. Max Headroom
is there any way to check this easily? i.e. without taking everyting to bits do you have a phone I could listen to it from, I am not an expert but may be able to either confirm the noise or not. If you want to do this pm your number and I will have a listen.

Mike M
Hi supra-man, You could try holding a screwdriver to you ear and place it around the top of the engine and have a good listen. I've just been out annoying the neighbours revving the engine and listening. Mines sounds like it's turning over smooth and the tapping is coming from the injectors in time with the revs. Mike

_Rob_
As Mike M mentioned the squeek could be the power steering pump, mines been doing it for a while. check the aux drive belt or serpentine belt at the front of the block for cracks, wear and tightness. if that seems well, squirt a little WD40 down the shaft of the power steering pump pullel and see if that stops it. if its the later PS pump bearings may be on the way, or shot. cant help with the click though. Ian W
cheers Rob. i'm hoping it's just a lack of tension as the belt seems to slip when turning the wheels at a stand-still. buggered if i have a clue what the ticking is though...and that's what is worrying me most!! cheers anyway mate
bignum
could be your aux belt tensioner wheel, take the belt off and spin the pulleys by hand to see if theres any play in the bearings.
