Odo meter and steering gone crazy!

Hey

I removed my strutbar (TRD) to clean it, but because it was starting to get dark outside i was planning to put it back tomorrow. No problems here.

After that i took my dashboard apart, i wanted to put my gauges nicely in pods. After i have done that i placed everything back in order. i started the car and drove away.

i noticed that my steering felt differently and thought it was because i removed the strutbar.

After 5 minutes of driving the big red ! came up in the rpm meter cluster and the yellow engine light lit up.

I stopped the car imidiatly and turned off the engine!

i thought i left some tools in the engine bay wich caused this error. But i counted all the tools and nothing was missing.

no tools were missing so i checked all the other things, like steering fluid, oil, almost all the wires in the engine bay, everything!

Nothing! , than i thought about the dahboard, maybe i forgot some connectors. i checked them all and found out that one wire was broken - at the odo meter. (the car had a converter, but i removed it because in holland we use KM and not Miles) i repaired the wire.

i started the engine again and no errors showed up.

But, my odo meter isn;t reading anything anymore! it is showing my miles but it doesn;t count anymore not even the other A and B distance. Everything else works properly but my odo meter isn;t counting. i'm 100% sure i repaired the wire properly.

And my very light steering was still there. is it because i removed the strutbar? or is my steering gone mad?my cluster gauges are showing proper values. except the odometer. is the steering and odo meter connected with eachother in some way?

- odo meter isn;t working

-very light steering, too smooth - or do i have an incorrect feeling and is it because i used to drive around with a strutbar?

Most important question: is it safe to drive with it? i want to go to my work tomorrow :D

Sounds like your delimiter/mph convertor has screwed up something in the ecu?

I'm pretty sure that steering weight is governed by the speed. It's one of the things that is never corrected properly when putting in a mph convertor.

But the converter isn;t in my car for months!.

The converter did use 2 wires from the odometer. After i removed the converter i just reconnected the wires together. No problems for months. But tonight i found out that one wire was broken (one of the two wires wich has been used for the converter) i repaired it again. But the odometer doens;t count. I think my problem has to to with those wires, but can those wires make my steering go mad? - The speedometer is working fine. i assume the should be connected with the RPM and speedometer and not with the odometer.

The odo sends the speed signal to the rest of the car, including the control unit for the power steering. It changes the assistance with speed, so you get more assistance when you are stationary or moving slowly and less as you speed up. So if the odo is not getting a speed signal then your power steering will also think you are stationary and be very light. In theory it shouldn't damage anything if you drive it, but with the steering so light you will have to be very careful.

Check the middle plug on the back of the dials. It isn't actually a plug, but is used to join various things together. It sounds like the speed signal that goes into the speedo is not connected to the odo and therefore the rest of the car.

Where in holland are you dude? I'm down in south brabant. A guy called arnout is up in harlem. If you drop me a pm I may be able to help you.

My guess is that you've severed the link from the ECU to the speedo somehow. The steering is progressive and that needs a speed input. I'm not 100% certain but I think the feed for that comes downstream from the speedo pickup.

Thanks people.

I couldn;t resist it and do nothing atm, i took a flash light a tried to get more info. I resolderd the wires at the odometer wich are 100% fine now. But what i didn;lt saw before was that my Blitz ID meter wasnlt getting a signal either. So tomorrow morning i will take a look at the wires of the ECU, blitz id meter is connected to the speedo wire maybe that one got a bad connection. I will try as well whay you said SimonB.

dangerous brain, Arnout is sleeping atm :p i will contact him if i can;t solve it by myself tomorrow.

Offtopic, did you take the red supra with you? i life between Hoek van Holland and Rotterdam, that's aprox 40 min of driving to you :)

Yep, the speedometer is working as it should.

I have the TSRM and found out what could be the cause (fuse, wire broken)

Another strange thing, my blitz idmeter idn;t getting a signal either. Wich is connected to the ecu.

I'm going to buy a multimeter in the afternoon.
