rik
I've applied for a job at an engineering company as a mig welder. They have invited me to go do a weld test on Monday! Now i have plenty of experience mig welding cars on thin gauge material, but these guys are welding 20mm+. I really dont know what differences to expect using this sized material and was wondering if any body could link me to any online guides or demonstrations or any general how-tos for mig welding. Like i said i've lots of experience gained while working at an auto body repair centre, but have not done any official courses. Any help or advice greatly appreciated. I'm wondering if i'm going to make a complete tit out of myself!!!

Andy-No-Knee
Mig welding 20mm thick plate?? What is it, oil rigs? or Tanks?? You will get a much different gun and the wire core will be alot thicker. You may get a pedel operated gun that also varies the temp of the gun. Tell them when you arrive the thickness that you are used to and they will prob let you have a little play when you try out. You may need help getting the temp level and cooling gas shield level correct. Or try http://www.twi.co.uk/j32k/index.xtp for The Welding Institute. rik
Cool, I don't know if they're building tanks or not!!! The guy mentioned that they do small batches for structures and such like. I've seen the job advertised in a few places now, so don't really hold much hope of getting it job with my limited experience. They're bound to get a lot of applicants that know the score. Just hope i don't end up welding my watch to the bench (only kidding, i know you couldn't really do that!)
