Should my car have boosted like mad??

My car is totally stock! and boosting to about 0.7 bar. I notice yesterday that the car was boosting at 0.9 bar steadily. I had a look at the pipe work to the wastgate and to my surprise the pressure pipe had popped off the wastgate.

Surely if that happened the cars boost should have sky rocketed as the wastgate function was taken away. Which is what I would have expected.

Or do you think the cats + stock exhaust saved me certain engine/turbo damage.

.

'Sky'rocketing is a relative term

It depends on how tight the wastegate spring is. It keeps the wastegate from opening when pushed by the gases on the other side (commonly refered to as 'backpressure')

With minimised backpressure, a UKSpec can go up to 21-24psi if the wastegate is disconnected. (also depends on the age of the spring, ambient air temp etc)

yeah, they contribute to the higher 'backpressure' that pushes the wastegate earlier.

Fuel cut would have kicked in a bit later anyway, and in any case the engine wouldn't be damaged at these levels - it runs very rich from the factory.

Neither would the turbos be damaged.

I am currently running in TTC mode and due to VSV/ECU problems, and i am just running boost on the STD waste gates setting and restrictor ring, it seems to be reasonably steady at 1.2 bar with the odd spike to 1.2.5

I'm wondering if fitting an electronic boost controller would help spool up and limit the spikes?

Anything that keeps the wastegate from seeing pressure before it's time can only help spoolup.

My favorite is a simple MBC (ball and spring). No wires, no bling, no nonsense.

£15-odd from freebay (an Ozzie fella was selling them at the time)

Trouble is there is something very strange with my sequential system, i think it relates to the ECU control of two of the VSVs, i can only get it to boost to 1.2 bar in TTC mode, although i must admit i haven't put it back into sequential mode to double check the VSV problem, i like the TTC mode;)

however the problem seems to lie with the first turbo waste gate VSV, but there are other VSV related problems to.
