Had some fun last night...

Driving down the motorway from Preston, just before junction 32 heard a "pop" my traction control warning light started flashing, half my buttons (heaters, a/c etc...) lights went off. Thought I must hae blown a fuse or something so I kept going. Got off at junction 34, disin't have to stop at the lights...sailed straight through. Got to Kingsway bath's traffic lights and had to stop. My car sounded like a diesel and smoke was pouring out!!! Luckily some friends of mine were just round the corner at Halfords so I droe to there.

Looked under the bonnet and the radiator pipe had popped off and the engine was very very very hot. Waited about an hour, filled the radiator up turned it on, struggled a bit at first but then settled to normal revs. But now absolutely stinks of coolant/oil.

Does anyone know whats caused it, or if it'll have caused any lasting damage? :(

Why do you guys wait until you've virtually blown the thing up, before you get your arses out of the seat and stick your heads under the bonnet. :(

How much more warning do you need that something is wrong, than a "pop" from under the bonnet and half the interior controls stopping working.

A quick stop (on the hard shoulder if neccessary) and a peek under the bonnet can prevent long term damage rather than blindly hoping that nothing is wrong, when its patently obvious that something is :(

Hopefully you haven't done anything serious and it was a case of either the rad cap failed to release the pressure, or one of the hoses was loose and just slipped off, although I must admit that either scenario seems unlikely.

Hopefully you'll put it down to experience, and next time you hear a strange noise FFS investigate it before the thing goes :bang:
