Priority, AFR or Intercooler first?

AFR or Intercooler, what should be my priority?

I'm not running big boost or power anymore due to a restrictor ring in place, that's reduced boost from 1.4 down to 1.1 - 1.2.

Would an AFR with an upgraded fuel pump, have any effect with the smaller Jap injectors? Or would they need to be changed too?

Or

Would it be in the best interests of my engine to have an upgrade intercooler first?

Definately Intercooler IMHO, especially if its the original fitment as it's likely to be crumbly and horrid now. You'll also notice the benefits of cooler charge air.

Fitting a uprated pump and afpr will not give you any gain when running your current boost level.

And when you decide to up the boost the IC will already have been done.

I plan to stay on 1.1 - 1.2 bar, so would you say sorting the fueling is important or not necessary at those boost levels?

I have been reading you get good gains bhp wise with an FMIC, 50 bhp hike being a claim on MKIV.com.

But to be honsest my main aim is to protect the engine, not gain more power.

Guess the good thing with fitting an FMIC it's something I can do myself.

Safe boost on the j-specs is 1.2 bar i believe, the only advantage of changing the fuel pump will be having a new fuel pump and not one that could be 10 years old (sorry dont know the age of your car)

Whereas fitting an uprated IC is going to reduce charge air temps, thus lowering EGT's thus lowering chances of Detonation, and also having a perfomance enhancing benefit. The only downside is the cost.

Looks like FMIC is the way to go then.

Just been looking at some on the market, one of the Greddy intercoolers seems like an obvious choice, as it fits without having to remove the active spoiler.

Prices are a little steep in this country, guess I could import from the states.

The cars a 95' so may as well get a new upgraded pump too.

Thanks for your help.
