Intake temperature measurements

As I'm sure many others have, I've been wondering if and when I might need to get a new (and probably uprated) SMIC/FMIC...

currently at bpu but would like to make sure the car is healthy as it can be (especially in the hot weather). The next stage of a single is not on my short term plan right now.

So, my question: could I make use of one or maybe a couple of these:

http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=3258&criteria=temperature&doy=27m6

to gauge intake temps and therefore make a calculated (rather than guess) decision on any upgrades

I was thinking one after the IC for real inlet temps and one either pre turbo or pre IC. I'd like one pre turbo because I also want to fit/make a cold air box and I'd like to be able to measure the difference of that.

can a sensor like this be plumbed into a pipe? if there is pressure there (up to 1.2 bar currently) then will I be able to seal it up again (i.e. drill a small hole into pipe and put sensor in and then seal with something appropriate)

anyone tried it?

I just want something cheap that will do the trick, if it is expensive I'd be better off putting the money to the IC anyway

Ideally what you'd need is the probe mounted/sealed into a hollow bolt and then bolted/sealed in place. I had one in the throttle body rubber of my GT4 and ended up having to bolt and wire it in place to stop it blowing out at 1.3 bar :)

i used a cheap internal/external temp sensor on my old Nissan pealed away the plastic rubbish from around the ext sensor, drilled a small hole in one of my alloy boost pipes and chemical metaled the sensor to the inside of the pipe and sealed the hole, works fine not 100% accurate but near enough.

...anyone tried it?...

Yeah, I've tried it....then took it back and got a refund:d

There was nowhere to connect the probe at the back of the display - believe it or not. The children at the Maplin counter didn't have a clue either.

Go for a K-thermocouple like Terry said, much better and responds quicker too.
