There are no nice areas in portsmouth and traffic on and off the island can be a nightmare.

Ewen's list is a very good place to start, but traffic in and out of hamble (1 B road) is very bad at rush hour.

Yup the main road into Hamble is a mare during rush hour. But as you may be working there, you will find that theres a couple of back roads that cut a good bit of the queue off...one through the back of Bursledon and one via Netley. Netleys and Bursledon are quite nice places btw. And only a few miles from Hamble.

Hambles got some good pubs, and the famous Jolly Sailors just up the road. Warsash is nearby but on the other side of the river. Theres a daily ferry (pedestrian) from Warsash to Hamble but it doesnt start till 9 am and last ones 5.15 as I remember. Rentings cheaper in close-by areas like Sholing / Bitterne / Weston, but I wouldnt live there by choice:p.

BTW, if you didnt already know, Hamble is about 6 miles from the M27

Blimey we've lived around this area for about 5 years and one of my good friends lives in Warsash and I never realised there is a ferry from Warsash to Hamble.

Good factual post, thanks! :)

I dont know if its still running, but I believe it is, and its PINK.

Years ago it was great as a pub-crawl device.

Once I got into a fight in Hamble and I was badly outnumbered (I treat odds of five against one as healthy exercise, but 12 against one is just daft), so I ran to catch the ferry to escape...the ferry was about eight feet from the pier so I jumped and just managed to make it. 'Thank god' I said...The skipper replied 'dont relax yet sunshine, we are coming in, not out, aarr matey'

(sorry for slight embelishment there)

So did you get a beating?

:) I was talking b......ks as usual. Actually it became known as 'Fisters last stand'. I took out ten of em, but the last two were lesbian kick-boxers from Fratton Park...I didnt stand a chance and ended up in casualty with a boat-hook up my ass.

I work in Hamble, where have you been offered a job?

Hamble is a max of 3 miles from J8 M27 and the roads through the back ways dont stop you getting caught in the que from the Netley roundabout down over the railway bridge, which is where the main problem is.

Hamble is well busy now, although I swear some of the locals know not the world exists past the railway bridge.

:) we used to live in Bursledon, and it felt like being out in the sticks sometimes. First week after moving in we had a visit from 'Lord Bursledon', a nice eccentric chap in a dressing gown and slippers, welcoming us to the area. Wonder if hes still around. We used to walk through the woods out the back of our house and into the Lone Barn car park...very handy...and our cat used to come with us. Christ that was 23 years ago.

:) So true! Marques estate agents are very good, cover rent and buying, based at London Road Southampton or Bell Street Romsey. Definately avoid Sholing, Bitterne & Woolston. You might find the commute from Basingstoke a bit harsh, some friends of mine travel from Southampton to Basingstoke. Hamble is nice if you can get in there...
