toyotasuprauk
Following on from a post I made last year: http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=41102&highlight=overheating My car is overheating again when the air con is on. It only seems to do it occasionally. Since last year the rad cap has been replaced and during its service in winter the coolant was changed for the Toyota red stuff. For two weeks of driving with the air con on its been fine, then on Saturday it overheated a few times and it happens quite quickly, turning the heating on for a few minutes with the air con off brings it back to normal temperature in a minute or two. Today I drove for 30 minutes today with the air con on and the temperature stayed at a normal temperature. Stopped for five minutes and drove off, within a minute I could see the gauge rising again so I didn’t wait to see how high it would go just put the heating straight on again. The fan seems to be working fine, the coolant looks good and is half full in the overflow bottle, without the air con on it never overheats. Any one got any ideas what to try? Lucifer
Ah ok, best get it flow tested to be sure, else it could be your Head gasket, very common an NA's
toyotasuprauk
Silly question but how do I get it flow tested? What does that involve and can any garage do it? I don’t want to buy a rad to find it wasnt that. Hope it’s not the Head Gasket, the water and oil look fine and the fact it only does it when the air con is on and only on really hot days gives me hope it’s more like to be radiator related. Lucifer
Here is what I would do without being able to see / hear / test it:- Check pressure of top and bottom hoses Check Clutch fan operation Check you have fan shroud Check thermostat opeation Check coolant level For starters

Guest gzaerojon
my soop had problems last week, turned out to be the thermostat if you run it up to normal temp then see if the bottom hose is warming up, mine was stone cold while the top hose was hot. took out the thermostat and left it out (untill i could get a new one) and it was ok. also dropped it in a a pot of boiling water to see if it moved but only 1mm or so
toyotasuprauk
Very helpful! Can I reach the bottom hose ok without removing the tray etc? I'm thinking it probably is the thermostat, is it a hard job to do myself? I'll have a search too.
