Reverse gear in auto + ignition probs

I had two problems today that may not be conected but I thought I would post them both the same time just in case.

Problem 1.

Travelling down the M4 early this morning cruising at around 85-90. Suddenly, I heard a couple (possibly 3) loud "bangs" and the car felt as if the brake pedal had been hit a couple of times. No warning lights, nothing else happened for about 3 miles when suddenly, the car lost power. I pulled to the H/S and felt that it was missing but driveable. Still no warning lights. Tried driving off, got to around 3000 revs and it died again. Called the AA and they towed me to Oxford where Mr. T diagnosed it as "the clip holding the lead going to the ignitor was broken". He fixed this and all was fine.

Problem 2.

After leaving Mr. T, I drove the 10 miles home without incident and went to my local shops. Came back to the car, started it and put it into reverse but got no drive. I tried in in D and it drove forward. I then noticed that the traction control light was flashing. I turned the engine off and restarted but the same thing happened. Sat for a minute or two (panicking) tried again and reverse engaged.

So, what do you think guys? Are the problems related? If not, what could be the problem with the g/box? Could it be something to do with the RLTC I have fitted? I say that as in order to engage it, I have to turn off the "normal" TC button.

Hi Colin, I wouldn't have thought the two were related, but I'm not brave enough to dismiss it completely.

Have you checked the autobox fluid level? - A car I had a few years ago lost reverse when the auto fluid was low...

Hope its that simple.

I wouldn't have thought so either Matt. I havent checked the fluid level but will do so tomorrow. In saying that, why do you think the trac off light was flashing at the same time? :conf:

He didn't. The car could still drive, albeit slowly, so we went down the hard shouldewr and off at the next junction which, luckily, was only about 1000m away.

OK, the car started fine this morning and was also AOK when I took it for a long(ish) run, so i am assuming the ignition problem is now sorted.

After warming the car up with a 10 mile trek, I have checked the Auto box fluid and that seems OK too. If anything, the level was high rather than low. The colour was kind of rusty red and there wasn't any bad smell emanating from it.

So, I am still at a loss for why it would not go into gear yesterday. Also, i am still confused as to why the Trac control off button was flashing.

Any ideas anyone?
