Chips

Hi all

I am thinking of getting rid of my Superchips chip in the near future. I had this put in when the car was brought over from Japan - it has converted the speedo to miles and done the deristriction, but odo is still reading and displaying in miles, and I'm not sure the Supe likes this chip very much. I found out after it was fitted that Superchips don't recommend them.

I started looking into this a while back but got made redundant so I had to put it all one hold for a bit. Now my head is battered trying to remember where I was at!

I know I can convert with a chip or with a black box. I guess if I get a black box I will need to get a standard Jap chip? If I get a black box I don't want the odo to start reading in mph unless I can get it wound back to the mph value by someone who will give me paperwork to verify it. (Too lazy to do the conversion - it's bad enough when it's just in kph). It would be preferable to have mph as I'm a contractor and have to submit my mileage every week!

If I go the chip method:

1) Can anyone recommend a good chip?

2) Can I get a Stage 1 or above without doing any significant mods? About all I can afford in the near future is induction kit, decat pipes, exhaust and boost controller. I don't mind the chip being a waste of space for a bit but I don't want it to damage the car.

I kinda just now the basics of this so any advice would be appreciated.

Also if there is anything I shouldn't do at the risk of melting my pistons etc please tell me!

Cheers as always

I may have read this wrong, but you don't need (or want) any sort of chip that will mess with your ECU. It sounds like a TRL mph/km convertor chip will sort out your speedo and odo, and his boost-cut controller (a separate unit) will allow you to take full advantage of your decat etc in the future. Both are well proven and highly recommended.

Full Decat is the way to go but make sure you are not running over 1.2bar or engine damage could be the result.

Cheap performance gains:

Full Decat + performace exhaust

Fuel Cut chip

Boost gauge (To make sure you keep below 1.2bar)

Maybe motorsport fuel pump

Maybe colder plugs

Maybe restrictor ring

Check condition of your intercooler

You probably wont need a boost controller after full decat on a J spec. Loads of threads on this old chestnut....

HTH anyway

Adam - I was kinda thinking the chip way because I'm pretty sure I'd have to swap the chip back to standard ECU for a black box. Although I guess that wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing!

Darren - that's really helpful thanks mate. I'll go read up the articles on boost controllers and J-spec. Will I need to buy a fuel cut chip before I get in touch with Chris W for decat pipes? It must make loads of difference if so :)

Jake - Doh! Yes, kilometers. I must be getting a miles fixation!

Steve - What kind of oil to cook them in? I guess nobody would recommend fully synth :D
