Hi there, new to this website.

I have the chance of getting a crash damaged j-spec n/a supra (category D write-off). Had it out for a test drive tonight and it seems a bit unstable when driving, specifically when changing gear during full throttle the car seems to lunge a bit to the right. Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this, and if so, how it can be remedied or should I just walk away?

Your prompt response would be greatly appreciated.

jesus and your still seriously considering this car??? ok then ...........

it could be the chassis is twisted as thats what mines was but mines was twisted in such a way it did not lunge. if it is the chassis thats twisted then your talking a LOT of money to get it done right and i mean a lot but you have to spend up to £200 just to get it on a jigg to find out , it could be something as the wheels are needing tracked badly

but i would not risk it if it is that apparent, you will be faced with a huge bill when you could have spent a little bit more and got a proper one

Well I'm technically minded and I say all it needs is some air in a tyre!! lol ;)

i only said what i'd do! :p

what the hell though, take Alex's advice and if it's not just the air in the tyre send the bill to him :D

Thanks for the responses so far. I have chacked the tyre pressures and they all seem fine.

This is where it gets a bit more mental lol. Obviously couldn't get a good look at the car in the dark last night, gave it going over this morning and it seems to have different sized tyres on the rear.....255/40/17 on one side and 235/45/17 on the other side. checked all the internal wings of the engine bay and they all seem true and undamaged (it was a front end shunt - apparently!!) Got it booked it at my local garage tomorrow at 9.00. The mechanic did mention the geometry and tracking but he'll have a better idea when he sees the car. I haven't parted with any "hard earned" yet so more intrigued to see if I can get the car fixed at a reasonable cost.

you laugh, but ive noticed when i change gear my car does this to the left, not all this time and not hard either. i checked yesterday and that tyre does have less air then the other (thats a visual check)

Well yeah DIFFERENT sized tyres on the same axle is VERY bad and will result in a feeling like that of one tyre being flat...

The owner really should replace BOTH tyres on the same axle with new ones....and I'd want to know how many miles have been covered with the wrong ones on.

The owner sounds a bit shady and well like he's bodged it...

Would there be any transmission wind-up with different width tyres, presuming the final outer diameter is the same on both sides?

Notwithstanding the above, I personally would want to buy a car albeit crash damaged, from someone who cared for it, and someone who runs odd sized tyres on the same axle is clearly a waste of sperm.

Guess we''l find out more after tomorrow morning and the mechanic has had a good look at it. The car has 235/45/17's on the front. Would it be better having the same size all round or should, if I decide to progress with the car, go for the 255/40/17's on the rear?

Thanks again for your reponses so far, very much appreciated.

It wouldn't be massively out because we're talking about 1 rear wheel being a 235/45 and the other is 255/40. But they would be different.

I wouldn't expect too much transmission wear, but as said this isn't caring for a Supra or any other car.

From what you have said all a I would say is walk away now !!!

Indeed there are better cars out there...and Supra's arn't cheap to run - if you can't afford a proper one then IMO you probably can't afford to run one either.

Hi there, well got the verdict back from the garage today and it wasn't good. Jigging required, gearbox was wear (no doubt caused by the differing rear tyre sizes!!!) so in all fairness to a few of your replies I'm gonna walk away, better to spend £100 just now to find these faults than to be left with rather hefty repair bills to get it up to scratch.

I had been offered the car for £3000 so it did have potential to be a viable porposition but in this case sensibility has to prevail.

Thanks again for all your input, very much appreciated.

As for Alex's comment about me not being able to afford to run one, I am currently running a Subaru Impreza RB5 without any crippling effects to my bank account. No doubt something else will come along in due course, just not this time.
