Rob
..any advice about my ongoing Sony Laptop problems. The CD drive won't do anything but play music CDs, the PCMIA slots stopped working ages ago and IE never shuts down so I have to "End Process" in Task Manager. I was going to buy a small USB backup drive and then just re-format the whole thing and start again, but then I thought, if the CD drive is fooked it won't reload Windows from the recovery disk. Any thoughts please? It Win XP home and is about 4 years old, a VAIO but I can't remember the model number.

Rob
Hmmm, what can you do for me? (to quote that Utah Saints song) No seriously, as I work in North Leeds, what can you do with it in the space of a lunchbreak?
Lewis
you would probably need to leave it with me for the day and pick it up later mate. I'm not even sure if I will be there during the week or a weekend thats the only thing. I have the 2nd phase of a critical network move and so it may be out of hours. Best if I contact you nearer the time? You could always courier it to me in oxford...
MrRalphMan
Rob, It might be worth trying a dummy install to see if the setup program loads from the CD drive when you BOOT. You might have to change the boot sequence in the BIOS first to ensure it'll try to boot from the CD prior to the HD. Paul.
BASHTHEBISHOP
Do the usual rubbish 1st - download all available XP updates for it including any service packs that are not already installed. If its still playing up you will have to let someone with IT knowledge look at it. Good luck
Rob
It does indeed boot from the CD recovery discs, albeit with a lot of whirring and clicking from the drive.
MrRalphMan
At least you know that you can re-install the OS now. If you had XP Pro then you could have tried the auto repair option, I think that a full install after a format might be in order.
